(a) a 2 − b 2 (1 mark)

(b) ( x2 − 3xy)2 − (6 y 2 − 2 xy)2 . (3 marks)

9. Miss Chan’s average monthly income is $32 545 this year and she has an allowance of
$225 000. The standard rate is 15% and the progressive rates are shown in the table below.
(a) Find Miss Chan’s salaries tax payable if the tax is charged at progressive rates. (3 marks)
(b) By comparing the salaries tax payable at the standard rate and the salaries tax
payable at progressive rates, find her salaries tax payable this year. (2 marks)
(c) Miss Chan deposited $x on 1 January 2022 and on 1 July 2022 at an interest rate
of 4% p.a. compounded half-yearly. It is found out that the total amount she gets
on 31 December 2022 is enough to pay the salaries tax payable this year. Find
the minimum value of x. Give your answer correct to the nearest integer. (2 marks)

(a) Miss Chan’s net chargeable income:

32545 12 − 225000 1M
= $165540

Salaries tax payable at the progressive rates:

50000  2% + 50000  6% + 50000  10% + (165540 − 50000  3)  14% 1M for the formula
= 1000 + 3000 + 5000 + 2175.6 with finding the
reminder times 14%
= $11175.6 1A

(b) Salaries tax payable at the standard rate:
