1 mark for both equations written correctly.
Compare coefficients of a and b to get 2 equations:

5 16
coefficient of b : = µ
7 21
3
coefficient of a : λ = 3 − 3µ

Therefore µ = 16 and λ = 81 . (1) Answer + Correct Working
Correct values of λ and µ receive 3/3 marks given an appropriate
method.

Question 2)
Let the first Fibonacci number be 1, then 1. The next Fibonacci
number is defined as the sum of the previous 2 numbers. Therefore,
the series goes as follows: 1, 1, 2, 3. . .

Daryl does not have any friends. To change that, he looked to genie
Derrick and he said in a booming voice ‘List the first 6 Fibonacci
numbers. Erase any 2 numbers of your choice, and instead, write
down the sum of the 2 numbers subtracted by 4. Repeat this process
until one number remains. That is the number of friends you will
have.’ Daryl trembled under his mighty strength, but his goal is to
maximise the final number.

a) Write down the first 6 Fibonacci numbers, and state the sum (1)

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8
Sum = 20
Cao − 1 mark

b) Consider how the sum changes after each step in the situation above (2)

Decreases by 4 - Both marks

c) Write down the maximum final number of friends Daryl can have and why.

Equation of the form 20 − 4(5) = 0 or equivalent - All 2 marks

If no marks are awarded, give 1 mark for stating the final number is 0.

Question 3 b)
For this question, we will be utilizing the fact that ⌊x⌋
refers to the integer less than or equal to x. E.g.
⌊π⌋ = 3, ⌊6.1293⌋ = 6, ⌊log11 2⌋ = 0

Two friends, Hoelum and Eugene were kidnapped and put

in a secret lair deep underground after they both forgot
the “+c” after an integral. They find a staircase that leads
up and down and decide to split up to go up and down
the staircase. Eugene decides to go up the staircase, the
upward path is modelled:

y = 2 log11 (⌊x⌋)
Sketch the graph that represents the first 5 steps that he
will walk up (y=0 is the starting floor which should not
be considered the first step.)

Shape: 5 horizontal lines = 2 marks

Noting the y value of horizontal lines (1 mark):
• 1st: (on the x-axis)
• 2nd: 2 log11 2
• 3rd: 2 log11 3
• 4th: 2 log11 4
• 5th: 2 log11 5

i)
• Using rectangles (either implied in working or drawing the
graph out), 1 mark
• Summing all the rectangles together, 1 mark
• Combining all logs via log law, 1 mark
• Final answer simplified form, 1 mark

ii)
Hoelum, foolishly, decides to go down the staircase where
he will meet his demise. The downward staircase is mod-
elled with:
y = −2 log11 (⌊3 − 2x⌋)
Sketch the graph of the downward staircase for the first 5
steps (y=0 is again the starting floor and is not counted
as the first step)
• 4 in negative x direction. Reflect in y-axis. Scale parallel to x
axis by 12 . Reflect in x-axis.
• −1 < x < 1.5
Need 5 horizontal lines again

− 1, y =0
0→− 0.5, y = −2 log11 (2)
−0.5 →− 0, y = −2 log11 (3)

− −0.5, y = −2 log11 (4)
−1.5 →
− −1, y = −2 log11 (5)

Question 4

AM = 8, CM = 24, MD = 6, r = 3
Y is the perpendicular bisector of AB where AY = YB
AB intersects CD at 90 degrees.

(a) M B = 18
1 mark for correct final answer. 1 mark for using ’Chord-Chord Product
Theorem’
24 MB
Triangle AM C is similar to triangle DM B. 8 = 6 , M B = 3 × 6 = 18.

9
(b) P T = 11.59 (or better)
1 mark for the use of Pythagoras in any manner.
2 marks for calculating P S.
1 mark for correct final answer.

10
√ √
(c) Radius = 5 10 (or 250 in unsimplified form)

• 1 mark for attempting to split both chords in half

• 3 marks for successfully constructing △AXY or equivalent
• 1 mark for correct final answer

Correct answer using a different method is automatically awarded full marks.

Question 5
Daryl is scared of Sid. They are on the vertices of a rectangular prism such
that Daryl is as far away as possible from Sid. The sum of the length, width,
and height of the prism is known to be 20cm, and the surface area of the prism
is known to be 175 cm2 .

a) Let the length, height, and width be a, b, c and form 2 equations ⟨2⟩

a + b + c = 20 − 1 marks

2ab + 2bc + 2ca = 175 − 1 mark

2
Hint: Consider (a + b + c)
b) Find the distance between Daryl and Sid. Considering that Sid’s biceps
can punch 16.4cm through the ground, in a straight line directly to Daryl,
will Daryl get brutally destroyed by the punch, or will he live to see another
day? ⟨4⟩
Max 3 Marks gained from the following:
• Evidence of expansion of (a + b + c)2 = a2 + b2 + c2 + 2ab + 2bc + 2ca
- 1 mark
• Evidence of substitution of equations of part a - 1 mark

11
• Equation obtained equivalent to: (20)2 = a2 + b2 + c2 + (175)
• Evidence of sqrt(a2 + b2 + c2 ) = sqrt(225) = 15cm
• Dependent final mark for inequality shown/implied/stated saying
yes:
15cm < 16.4cm

Question 6
The evil villain Kaitlynn wrote three secret two-digit numbers, x, y, and z on
a napkin. Huan Sha must name three numbers, A, B, and C, after which
Kaitlynn will announce the value of Ax + By + Cz. If Huan Sha can then
name Kaitlynn’s three secret numbers, Kaitlynn will let Huan Sha go. Save
Huan Sha! Come up with a way of choosing A, B, and C such that Huan Sha
is sure to escape Kaitlynn’s evil clutches.

Answer
• Suitable values of A, B, C that allow x, y, z to be easily identified in the
final number
• Example: A = 10000, B = 100, C = 1
A = 100000000, B = 1000, C = 1
• Note that A, B, C must differ by at least a factor of 100

Marks
• 3 Marks for suitable values of A, B, C
• If the answer is wrong, award 1 mark for any appropriate method/explanation
to get to a final answer.

Question 7
3x2 +9x+17
If x is real, then compute the maximum value of (3x2 +9x+7) . (3 Marks)

Answer

(3x2 + 9x + 17) (3x2 + 9x + 7) + (3x2 + 9x + 7) 10

2
= 2
+ 2
(3x + 9x + 7) (3x + 9x + 7) (3x + 9x + 7)
10
=1+ (1 point)
(3x2 + 9x + 7)

• 3x2 + 9x + 7 = 3(x + 3/2)2 + 1

4 so min value is 1
4 (1 point)
• Therefore the maximum value of 10
(3x2 +9x+7) is 10
(1/4) = 40, so the answer
is 1 + 40 = 41. (1 point)

Alternative:
• Let f (x) = 3x2 + 9x + 17 and g(x) = 3x2 + 9x + 7
f (x) (10+g(x))
• Then g(x) = g(x) = 10/g(x) + 1 (1 )

• To maximise 10/g(x) + 1, you need to minimise g(x) and g(x) > 0

• Proof that g(x) > 0
– For g(x), b2 − 4ac = −3 so < 0
– Hence g(x) > 0
• g ′ (x) = 6x − 9 = 0
• x = 3/2, g(x) = 0.25 (1)
• f (x) = 10.25

• 10.25
0.25 = 41 (1)
• An answer of 41 without proof that g(x) > 0 yields 2 out of 3 marks
