Christians in South Africa as assembled by TARUWA
MEDIA.
We first started in 2008 through PARABLE MAGAZINE
as Parable Leadership Awards. All the winners will be
featured in the bi-annual 100 CHRISTIANS Magazine.
100 CHRISTIANS has a mandate to recognised and hon-
our individuals who make extraordinary contributions
to society by living and applying biblical principles and
values in what they do.
The list of these CHRISTIAN LEADERS is exclusively
chosen by a panel selected by Taruwa Media and grouped
into the domain of government, business, arts and enter-
tainment, church, education, family, social justice etc.

stitches on her face.

Clicks. Afri-Berry is also found in Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana and New
Zealand.
Taking a leap of faith when hope was lost has made Relebohile Moeng a
successful black women in business.

Susannah Farr

Susannah is a visionary social entrepreneur who holds a Master of Philos-

Starting the business wasn’t easy as the owners had no funding other than their pensions and some credit assistance
through their family. Nevertheless they made a go of it, and augmented their knowledge with studies along the way.
Today, Kaylorac employs nearly 300 people and provides cane cutting and other farming support services to their
community’s joint venture cane company (Libuyile Farming Services) and other sugarcane growers in the Nkomazi area.
Together they also run a thriving events company and venue, Shonga Events.

With all the balls she’s juggling she still sets aside time to
give back to the community. Women’s health issues and
children’s education are causes very close to her heart.
She co-founded an NPO, InspireZA, where she provides
educational support to school children in need and donate

Thapelo Lekoane
Singer & Songwriter
Alex born Thapelo Lekoane is a singer and songwriter who
realised quite early in her life that she wanted to sing and
she pursued that dream relentlessly.
She’s always used music as a form of self-expression.
Whether she was singing as part of a church group or on
world stages, she wanted her music to mean something.
She found her voice and music became a form of expression
for her. Although music is a universal language, she believes
it is important to have intent with each song.
After high school, she went on to study a Bachelor of Music
Honours degree in vocal performance at Wits University
and hasn’t looked back.
Thapelo was a finalist on the first season of The Voice South
Africa. She has since worked as a music director and a
performer at the South African Tourism Awards and had the
honour of being the first female music director for the Castle
Lite Hip Hop Herstory event that celebrated women in Hip
Hop and the arts.
She recently got two nominations from the South Africa
Music Awards (SAMAS) for her album “Tapestry”

Boitumelo Phakathi

As a younger surgeon, with only a few fe-
male surgeons at the time and overcom-
ing the challenges of being a woman in a
male-dominated field led Phakathi to real-
ise the responsibility she had to ensure that
female surgeons after her are supported
and mentored to fast-track their success.
She then decided to start the Boitumelo
Phakathi Foundation, which focuses on
career advancement and career develop-
ment for youth in rural areas.
Born and raised in the North West village
of Taung, Phakathi describes herself as
a “humble, smart and ambitious young
woman who has a steadfast faith in God of
impossibilities”.
The 33-year-old is in the process of com-
pleting her PhD in the molecular biology
of breast cancer and HIV. She says breast
cancer and HIV are both burning issues in
women’s health in our time but not a lot
is understood and known about these two
diseases — especially when they co-exist.
Beyond her PhD, Phakathi is working to-
wards her professorship by improving her
teaching profile, research and polishing
up her leadership skills to prepare her for
her ultimate goal of being a vice chancel-
lor someday. She currently lectures, pub-
lishes and supervises master’s students at
Wits University.
She also runs her own foundation, the Boi-
tumelo Phakathi Education Foundation. It
focuses on personal development and ca-
reer advancement of youths in rural areas.

After having been diagnosed with endometriosis and undergoing a lap-
aroscopy, Tsaoane started to have conversations about sexual reproduc-
tive health with other women around her — this is when she realised that
many women suffer from serious ailments in silence.

Arise Women’s Health Foundation — with the intention to demystify sexu-

establish their efficacy. Through a friend, Zoey contacted a local cosmetic manu-

When 21-year-old Vanessa Goosen, a former Miss SA semi-finalist was asked to
take books back to South Africa for her boyfriend from a friend in Thailand, she
was unaware her life would change forever. It was 1994, and she had been in
Thailand looking for opportunities for her clothing business in Joburg. She agreed
to take the books, not knowing that the covers were filled with heroin.
Goosen was arrested, convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to death. On ap-
peal her sentence was commuted to life, to be served in Bangkok’s notorious Lard
Yao prison. She was 6 weeks pregnant at the time. After 16 long years in prison,
Goosen was released and returned to South Africa.

Jane Mashudu becoming a sex addict and
HIV positive. Jane grew up in an unhappy
home. Her mother was an alcoholic and
would leave home for days on end without
anyone knowing where she was. When her
mom was around, the house would be in
chaos.
Jane says her need to always have sex grew
even more to the point that she would
walk out at night hoping she would be
raped. She would also offer herself to men.
Since her dark days, Jane has rebuilt her
life and is hoping to help other young girls
to their wellbeing. Jane says she wrote a
book to reach out to young women who are
rebellious and living for material things to
relook their ways of life. “The risk is not
worth it. My daughter is 22 years old and I
don’t want her to walk into my footsteps,”
she says.
I was raped so frequently; I became numb
to it. By the time I was 14 I got pregnant
and tested HIV positive. The doctor told
me I was going to die and I then wondered
“What is the point of living?”. I gave up liv-
ing altogether. I started sleeping with every
man I met. Between the ages of 15 and 17
I had already slept with dozens of men;
different types, sizes and cultures. I wanted
to die, but death kept evading me. I tried
almost everything to kill myself, but nothing
seemed to work.
