TD – Parking Studies

1.

The figure above shows the duration of occupation for 3 parking bays monitored for 110 minutes
and the accumulation graph. For this period of 120 minutes, determine;
(i) The parking volume (ii) parking load (iii) average parking duration (iv) parking turnover (v)
the parking index

2.. From an in-out survey conducted for a parking area consisting of 40 bays, the initial count
was found to be 25. The number of vehicles coming in and out of the parking lot for a time
interval of 5 minutes is as shown in the table below. Find the accumulation, average occupancy,
total parking load and the AVD of the parking lot.

3. The parking survey data collected from a parking lot by license plate method is s shown in the
table below. Find the average occupancy, average turnover, parking load, parking capacity and
efficiency of the parking lot.

4. Over the course of an 8-hour day, 96 vehicles enter a store’s parking lot which has 5 spaces. On
average, a customer stays in the store for 15 minutes. Calculate the probability that an incoming
car will be rejected?

5. A parking lot need to be designed for a new shop. The owner anticipates that on an average 12-
hr day, 360 vehicles will visit the shop and will be parked for around 10 minutes. How many
parking spaces need to be provided in order to guarantee that no more than 1 vehicle in 50 will not
be able to find a parking space?

6. The owner of a parking lot observed that 20% of those wishing to park are turned back every
day during opening hours between 8 a.m to 6 p.m. An analysis of data collected at the indicates
that 60% of those who park are commuters with an average parking duration of 9 hours. The
remaining are shoppers whose average parking duration is 2 hours. If 20% of those who cannot
park are commuters and the rest are shoppers and a total of 200 vehicles current park daily at the
parking lot, determine the number of additional parking spaces required to meet the excess
demand? Assume parking efficiency is 0.90.
