1. (a) The speed of 2 vehicles A & B were measured at a point of a road section.
The speed of vehicle A was 120 km/hr and that of vehicle B was 60 km/hr. For
both vehicles, determine:
(i) the Time Mean Speed (5 pts)
(ii) the Space Mean Speed (5 pts)

(b) One lane of a highway is carrying 540 vehicles per hour. Assuming that
vehicle arrival rates at any point along the lane follow a Poisson distribution,
determine the number of vehicles per hour travelling along that lane at
headway of 4 seconds or more? (10 pts)

2. (a) The average length of each vehicle in a traffic stream is 7.0 m and the
average distance between each vehicle is 2.0 m. The headway at maximum flow
is 1.5 seconds. Determine;
(i) the jam density (5 pts)
(ii) the speed at maximum flow (5 pts)

2. (b) The average speed of a 1st group of vehicles over a road segment is 45
km/h and their flow is 1350 vehicles per hour. The average speed of a 2nd
group of vehicles over the same segment is 40 km/h and their flow is 1800
vehicles per hour. Determine the maximum flow of the whole traffic stream?

3. (a) A section of a highway has a speed-flow relationship of the form:

q = av2 + bv. It is known that at a flow (q) of 2900 veh/h the sms (v) of traffic
is 48 km/h. Determine (i) the speed (v) when the flow is 1400 veh/h? (6 pts)
(ii) the free-flow speed? (6 pts)

relationship: q = 50k – 0.156 k2
Determine (i) the maximum flow (qmax) of the highway section? (6 pts)
(ii) the speed at maximum flow? (6 pts)
(iii) the density (k) when the highway is at one-quarter of its capacity? (6 pts)

speed is 80 km/h. For an instant when traffic is flowing at 70% of the maximum
flow rate, determine;
(i) the two possible speeds? (8 pts)
(ii) the two possible spacing? (8 pts)
(iii) the two possible headways? (8 pts)
