Week One
Task No. Description Status Date
1 Kick-off Meeting Completed 19/02/2023
2 Identify Client Requirements Completed 21/02/2023
The kick-off meeting was conducted with Dr Nesrine Gaaliche and concluded the following:
Project Modifications:
Only one main part of the spider crane to be designed i.e., the crane boom.
No problems developed from the tasks of week 1. All tasks have been completed successfully and in
a timely manner. Moving forward to the next week, the identification of design parameters such as
type of boom to be designed and standards to be adopted and incorporated in the designing of the
crane boom.

Week 2
Week Two
Task No. Description Status Date
Task 1
Task one involved the determination of the crane boom type and have concluded that the folding
crane boom would not meet the requirements of the client. The telescopic crane boom is to be
adopted in the design of crane due to its ability to extend and retract. This task was completed
successfully in a timely manner and no problems were raised during the implementation of the task.
Task 2
This task was involved in determining the standards that will be incorporated in the design of the
crane boom. This task was completed with ease due to the literature found 1.
Overall progression is well in place, no delays occurred in completion of the tasks. Moving forward to
the next week, a preliminary hand sketch of the crane boom to be completed, and identifying the
other parts required.

Week 3
Week Three
Task No. Description Status Date
Task 1
A hand sketch of the crane boom was developed in a timely
manner (See Figure 1).
Task 2
This task was involved in identifying the other parts that
required the crane boom the function. Such as sliders, pivot
plates, and fasteners.
Figure 1: Crane Boom Rough Sketch
Task 3
This task was involved in searching in the local market for rectangular steel profiles suitable for the
design of the crane boom. Two steel suppliers were visited and are as follows:
Crystal Steel W.L.L. were not very helpful as they did not have any rectangular steel tubes which
meets the requirements of the project available in stock. On the other hand, Crystal Steel Co. were
very helpful and provided with sufficient details and specifications of the rectangular steel tubes that
are available along with their dimensions.
No problems were raised during the implementation of the tasks. Next week tasks involves the
design of the crane boom parts using Solidworks software.

Week 4
Week Four
Task No. Description Status Date
Only one task is being focused on the 4 th week of the project. Designing the crane boom started with
adding the profiles of the rectangular steel tubes on Solid works. Then designing the crane’s
telescopic boom (See Figures 2,3,4).
The task status remained as “On Going” due to the incompletion of design
the complete crane boom parts, which will move forward to next week’s
tasks.

Week 5
Week Five
Task No. Description Status Date
This task is a continuation from the previous week and was involved in completing the required parts
of the crane boom (See Figures 5,6,7). This task remains as “On Going” as the task is still incomplete
since week four and will move forward to week six for some fine adjustments and design
rectifications.

Week 6
Week Six
Task No. Description Status Date
Task 1
The design of boom parts on Solidworks is completed. A total of fifteen different parts were
designed.
Task 2:
This task was involved in designing custom bolt, nuts and screws that will fit and fasten all boom
parts together. Such as extending the bolts shank to accommodate the thickness of the steel walls.
Also rethreading the threads of the screws, nuts, and bolts to meet design specifications standards
(See Figures 8,9,10).
Delays in completion of designing the boom parts has tightened the schedule for the upcoming tasks.
No other problems were encountered.

Week 7
Week Seven
Task No. Description Status Date
Week 7 is involved in assembling the designed parts in Solidworks software. Mostly, all parts
correctly mated such as sliders, master pin (See Figures 11 & 12).
Some mating problems appeared due to implementing Mechanical Screw Mates. This problem is
causing delays in completing this task. Hence, the status of this task is still “On Going” and will be
shifted to Week 8.

Week 8
Week Eight
Task No. Description Status Date
1 Parts Assembly On Going 09/04/2023
This task was brought forward from the previous week 7, and it’s status is still “On Going”, as there
are major mating issues developing from the Mechanical Screw mate. Such problems arising are as
follows:
1. M30 Nuts are mated correctly, but when reopening the Solidworks file the mating settings
are damaged and M30 Nuts are left hanging (See figure 13).
2. After addressing the M30 Nuts issue, all the M8 Counter Sink Screws have mating issues. Still
investigation is on going to resolve the problem with consultation from experienced
Solidworks users (See Figure 14 & 15).

Pending Tasks for the Following Weeks
Upcoming Tasks
Task No. Description Status Date
1 Parts Assembly On Going TBA
2 Finite Element Analysis Pending TBA
3 Identify Slew Bearing Size Pending TBA
4 Design Slew Gear Pending TBA
5 Finalize Crane Design Pending TBA
6 Produce Detailed Engineering Drawings Pending TBA
Moving forward to the next coming weeks, the parts assembly task is to be completed as it is still “On
Going” status. This task requires the mating to be done perfectly to produce a effective Finite
Element Analysis (FEA).
After the FEA analysis is complete, the determination of bearing sizes is to be determined to ease the
movement of slewing, also the design of a slew gear is required to facilitate the movement of the
crane boom.
Finally, the production of detailed engineering drawings to facilitate the client in manufacturing the
crane.
