C1 FORMULA AND SYMBOLS

The Hiley dynamic pile-driving formula estimates the C = sum of temporary compressions of
ultimate axial compressive pile capacity for a driven pile dolly, packings and ground
pile. It is considered a less accurate assessment of (mm)
the driven pile capacity than that determined using
wave equation analysis software (e.g. GRLWeap). n= efficiency of blow (dimensionless)
The estimate is referred to as the ultimate driving
resistance to driven piles and is expressed as: h= free-fall height of hammer (mm)

R= Whn The free fall height shall be calculated as:

S + C/2 For trigger operated drop hammers

– the full fall.
where:
R= ultimate driving resistance (kN) For normally-proportioned winch operated
hammers-80% of the fall.
= ultimate limit state load / strength
reduction factor, when no negative For hydraulic hammer-the equivalent drop
skin friction acts on the pile specified by the manufacturer (maybe up to
95% for hydraulically accelerated hammers).
W = weight of hammer (kN)
H
S = final set or penetration per blow
(mean of final ten blows) (mm)
It is recommended that the required
final set per blow is less than
10 mm

NOTES:
If a short dolly in the helmet or driving cap is used in combination with 75 mm packing, the two
compressions should be added together to obtain Cc.

L is length of pile (mm).

E is modulus of elasticity. The value of E given for concrete is only valid when it is manufactured
from ordinary Portland cement. It will be greater for rapid-hardening or aluminous cement concrete.

The reader should refer to the worked examples which are provided below for more detail regarding
these calculations. When reviewing the following examples particular note must be taken of the pile
material type (i.e. Pinus Radiata Timber or Steel) and that Figure C4 only applies to Pinus Radiatia
