4. Generalization

multiplication? The properties of multiplication and
addition are
a. Commutative Property of
Addition/ Multiplication
b. Associative Property of
Addition/Multiplication
c. Additive Identity
d. Multiplicative Identity
e. Multiplicative Property of 0
f. Distributive Property of
Multiplication Over Addition
g. Distributive Property of

Associative ?

c. What are different Additive Identity and

Multiplicative Identity ?

d. What are different Distributive Property

of Multiplication Over Addition and
Distributive Property of Multiplication
Over Substraction ?

5. Application
Let us do an activity.
Here I have media, you can call “Stemp Media“
Let’s see, I want to show you how you can use
this.

STEMP MEDIA

1. Commutative Property of
Addition/Multiplication
We know that 25 + 6 = 31 and 6 + 25 =
31. Therefore 25 + 6 = 25 + 6.
If a and b are any two whole numbers
then a + b = b + a
If is obvious that 25-6 and 6-25 will not
give the same result. Thus, substraction is
not commutative.

The product of 3 and 5 is 15 and the

product of 5 and 3 is 15. Therefore, 3 x 5
= 5 x 3. This means that changing the
order of the factors does not change the
product.

If a and b are any two whole numbers

then a x b = b x a

2. Associative Property of
Addition/Multiplication

We know that 4+2+8 = ( 4+ 2 ) + 8

=6+8
= 14

Also, 4+2+8 = 4+ ( 2 + 8 )
= 4 + 10
= 14

Therefore, ( 4+2)+8 = 4+ ( 2 + 8 )
This is shows that the order of grouping
numbers together in addition does not
affect the sum.

If a a, b and c are any three whole

numbers then a + (b + c) = (a + b ) + c

The product 6x7x8 may be found in two

different ways :
a. (6x7) x 8 = 42x8 = 336
b. 6 x (7x8) = 6x56 = 336
Therefore, (6x7) x 8 = 6 x (7x8)

If a a, b and c are any three whole

numbers then a x (b x c) = (a x b ) x c

3. Additive Identity
Let us add zero to any whole number and
Check whether the sum is the number
itself.
Examples : 0 + 5 = 5 and 5 + 0 = 5
31 + 0 = 31 and 31 + 0 = 31
The examples above show that when zero
is added to any whole number the sum is
always the number itself.
If a is any whole number, then

a + 0 = a or 0 + a = a

4. Multiplicative Identity
When we multiply any whole number by
1, the product is the whole number itself.
Examples : 51 x 1 = 51 and 1 x 51 = 51
153 x 1 = 153 and 1 x 153 = 153
If a is any whole number, then

a x 1 = a or 1 x a = a

5. Multiplicative Property of 0
Any whole number multiplied by 0 gives
the product of 0
Examples : 22 x 0 = 0 and 0 x 22 = 0
If a is any whole number, then

ax0=0xa=0
6. Distributive Property of Multiplication
Over Addition
Let us consider the example.

Alfat extended his working hours for 3

hours and 4 hours respectively last week.
He was paid P 8 for every hour of extra
service. Let us get the total amount Alfat
received last week for the extra hours he
worked.

Solution : The amount Alfat received can

be calculated in two ways as shown
below.
a. P 8 x (3 + 4) = 8 x 7 = 56
If general, for any three whole numbers,
b. (8 x 3) + (8 x 4) = 24 + 32 = 56
a, b and c.
Clearly,
8We
x (3 + 4)a =x ((8b x+ 3)
have + ((8a xx b4)) + ( a x c )
c) =
7. Distributive Property of Multiplication
Over Subtraction

If a, b and c are any whole numbers, then

a x ( b - c) = ( a x b ) - ( a x c )

Example :

Who want to try use this ?
