4 Drafting and Revising

After we have completed invention activities and the arrangement of our ideas, we come to the
process of actual writing which is called drafting. Drafting is a continuous process of writing
when we go on writing our essay not just once but twice or thrice ( कच्चा हो ROUGH ). Every time we
write, we get more ideas and better arrangement of our essay and the essay becomes refined.
When we write the essay on the given topic for the first time, it is called first draft. Writing for
the second time is the second draft or a third time, third draft. We go on writing until we are
satisfied. And every time we write, we need to read it and make some changes which is called
revising. So drafting and revising make our essay better and refined.

Writing the First Draft

Writing the first draft means writing the essay for the first time on the given topic on the basis of
your points you have discovered during the invention and arrangement. When we have written
the essay, it is in the progress. There are some tips for writing the first draft. They are: beginning
with the body paragraph, getting the ideas down quickly, taking regular breaks and thinking,
keeping revision in mind and giving some time to revise and reread.

Revising Your Essay

Revision is not something we do after our paper is finished. But it is a continuous process in
which we need to think about the logic, clarity and how effectively ideas are presented. Revision
of our essay means rereading, re-seeing, rethinking and re-modifying the text for some
refinement. When we revise our essay, we might need to add, delete and reorder the sentences or
paragraphs. There are some advices that might be helpful for revising the essay. While revising,
give enough time or cooling-off period, revise on a hard copy, read aloud and make drafts, take
feedback, don’t get overwhelmed, and revise in different steps. Although the way how you revise
your essay depends on your assignment, time and context, but there are some revision strategies
that might be helpful for all.

1. First, revise with a checklist. You make a list of the ideas to check your essay and start
to revise. For example, you check your introduction, body and conclusion. You check
what to include in the introduction, what to include in the body and in the conclusion.
( essay ko format sanga related k k hunu parx i.e kamharuko list e.g unity , coherence ans welldeveloped chha??)
2. Second, revise with an outline. You have made a formal outline of your materials while
making arrangement. Look back to the outline and check whether some ideas are missing
or you need to reorder some ideas. (idea haruko list e.g topic sanga related concept , ideas ,eg causes of environment
sanga related kehi xutyo ki ?? )
3. Third, revise in a peer group. Peer group is the group of students who are similar to you
studying in the same level with the same interest at the same age. You should read your
essay aloud to them and take their feedback. Your friend's suggestion might be very
helpful in revision.
4. Lastly, revise with your teacher/instructor's comments. Your teacher might have given
you some written or oral comments for revision. They might give you some suggestions
about content, arrangement or language style.

In this way, we complete the drafting and revising of our writing process. After we do this,
we will move on to the next step of editing and final proofreading. If we follow these writing
processes, our text becomes refined and we will be good writers.
