LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN ENGLISH 7

Worksheet No.6, Quarter 3

Learner’s Name: ________________________________________

Grade Level/Section: ________________________________________
Date: ________________________________________

I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency
Cite evidence to support a general statement
B. Objective/s
Express evidence to support idea or general statement drawn from the text

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Are you having trouble finding answers and citing evidence in what you are
reading?
As a learner like you, it is natural to develop ideas, ask questions, and make
claims regarding what you are reading. Citing textual evidence requires students to look
back into the text for evidence to support an idea, answer a question or make a claim.
Text is a written work. Evidence is proof. Text + Evidence is citing proof in the
reading.
How do we provide evidence?
A. Answer the question using prior knowledge and inferences.
Prior Knowledge: When a reader has previous experience or has already read
about a particular topic, he will have some insights or knowledge to the topic before
reading it. Having prior knowledge on a topic will help the reader comprehend it better
than someone with no prior knowledge. It is almost like having the upper hand if
someone is already familiar with a topic. It provides extra support to the reader’s thinking
process.
Inference: It is an educated guess or reading of facts and evidence to reach a
logical conclusion or opinion. Making inferences while reading is a strategy that will help
you understand the text at a deeper level. It is best to draw a conclusion or form an
opinion by finding two or more supporting details in the reading passage. It also helps to
look for words or phrases that may express a positive or negative tone.
B. Cite evidence in the text to support your thoughts or opinions.

When answering questions about a reading assignment, look back at the text and
find proof for the answers within the text. Highlighting the text is an effective approach to
mark the evidence.

C. Explain your answer with evidence by paraphrasing or directly quoting.

In paraphrasing the author explains,; while the text shows. Use RAP: Read, Ask
yourself questions, and Put the information in your own words.

Quoting means: the author says, “…”; the text states, “…..”, which means that
quoting is copying exactly what the author is saying in your answer. Make sure to use
quotation marks.
III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Tasks
Task 1. WHAT’S IN THE PICTURE? A learner who can read picture is a
reader. Look very closely at the picture and cite evidence to support the
general statement given below..

homework by a roadside in the
Philippines has gone viral.

2. The boy is determined to study.

___________________________________________________________________.

3. The picture shows that education is for all.

___________________________________________________________________.

Task 2. Read the text thoroughly. Cite evidence to support the general statement.
Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

General Statement: Rain and snow are not the same.

Rain and Snow

Clouds are made of billions of drops of water. When the drops grow very big
and heavy, they fall as rain.
Snow is different. The weather does not have to be hot for water to
evaporate. Evaporation can happen in cold winter weather. Snow does not have to
melt to evaporate. Have you ever seen a patch of snow get smaller and smaller, yet
the ground is dry?

The water vapor reaches the upper air layer where it is freezing. The vapor
freezes, rather than condenses. Snow is frozen water vapor. Snow clouds are made
of billions of flakes of frozen water vapor.

Task 3. BE AN ACE DETECTIVE! Read the following short stories below and look for
an evidence from the text to support the general statement.
A.
Every day after work Paul took his muddy boots off on the steps of the front porch.
Alice would have a fit if the boots made it so far as the welcome mat. He then took off
his dusty overalls and threw them into a plastic garbage bag; Alice left a new garbage
bag tied to the porch railing for him every morning. On his way in the house, he dropped
the garbage bag off at the washing machine and went straight up the stairs to the
shower as he was instructed. He would eat dinner with her after he was "presentable,"
as Alice had often said.

1. Cite evidence that Paul is a construction worker.

2. Cite evidence that the characters are husband and wife.
________________________________________________________________
3. Cite phrases from the text that Alice is an organized person.

B.
Crack! Thunder struck and rain poured. Max stared blankly out the window, trying
to contain his emotions that raged like the weather. He was beginning to lose it.
Dropping the kite from his hand, Max broke out into full sob. His mother comforted him,
"There, there, Max. We'll just find something else to do." She began to unpack the
picnic basket that was on the counter and offered him a sandwich. Max snapped, "I
don't want a sand-wich!" A flash from the sky lit up the living room. Boom! Mom
sighed.

1. Cite evidence that Max is upset.

2. Provide a line / phrases from the text to describe the setting of the story.

3. Cite evidence that Mom and Max were going on a picnic.

B. Assessment
Read thoroughly the article and do the activity below.

'Bakuna muna': Duterte rejects August opening of classes

'I will not allow the opening of classes na magdikit-dikit 'yang mga bata,' says
President Rodrigo Duterte.

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, May 25, rejected

moves to open the upcoming school year in August, clashing with the Department of
Education's (DepEd) earlier announcement it could resume face-to-face classes in areas
with eased quarantine protocols.
Duterte stated his position on the matter in a recorded address aired close to
midnight on Monday, saying unless a coronavirus vaccine was available, he would not
allow children to physically attend classes.
"I will not allow the opening of classes na magdikit-dikit 'yang mga bata. Bahala na
'di makatapos, for this generation wala na makatapos na doktor, pati engineer. Wala
nang aral, laro na lang, unless I am sure they are really safe," Duterte said.

(I will not allow the opening of classes where students are close to one another.
Never mind if they can't finish, [if] for this generation, there will be no [student] who will
finish as a doctor or engineer. No more studies, just play unless I am sure they are really
safe.)

He added, "It's useless to be talking about opening of classes. Para sa akin,

bakuna muna (For me, there has to be a vaccine first)."

The President's decision departs from Education Secretary Leonor Briones' earlier
announcement that classes for school year 2020-2021 would resume on August 24 – a
call approved by the government's task force on the coronavirus last May 11.
Briones had mentioned classes may be conducted physically or virtually,
depending on the state of the coronavirus pandemic. She added it was "highly likely"
that classes would be held online for areas under enhanced community quarantine, and
that face-to-face classes may take place after August 24 "in areas allowed to open
physically."
As of Monday, only Cebu City and Mandaue City remain under enhanced
community quarantine (ECQ). Metro Manila, Laguna, Bataan, Angeles City, Bulacan,
Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Zambales are under modified ECQ, while the rest of the
country has shifted to a general community quarantine.
DepEd's decision was not well received, with parents and students criticizing the
department and saying it could be difficult for some students to enroll after the income of
many households were affected due to the pandemic.
Teachers also expressed their dismay over DepEd's decision, saying it could put
children and the safety of their families at risk.
Meanwhile, DepEd earlier said distance learning options would also be adopted,
while teaching methods and curriculum would be updated to match the "new normal"
during coronavirus pandemic.
The current setup, however, left many teachers and students overwhelmed, and
highlighted deep divides in access to education among those who could afford resources
needed to keep up with schooling during the pandemic.

On a separate sheet of paper, answer the following.

1. How does President Duterte feel about the opening of classes? Cite textual evidence
to prove your answer.
2. What is the stand of Sec. Briones about the opening of classes? Support your
answer with lines/phrases from the article.
3. What lines/phrases give a negative reaction from the DepEd’s decision?
