Module 1
Building and Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum

LESSON 1: Introduction to 21st Century Literacies

A. Traditional or Conventional Literacy

1. Here is a downloaded image of a prisoner trying to get the bread instead of the prison key.
From the image, how would you describe the prisoner? Submit your answer in our google
classroom. 10 pts.

Answer: His desire for survival outweighs his desire for

freedom. The prisoner accepts his captivity. Even if he gets
the key, there's no guarantee for him to be truly free. He'd
rather choose to fulfill his basic needs than bet his chances
to something unguaranteed. That's my interpretation of the
picture and I know a single picture could paint a thousand
words. The picture could also mean how humans tend to
choose short-term than permanent solutions. I've
encountered this picture many times already in Facebook
and I remembered one comment about it. It says the picture
depicts that we, humans, are easy to manipulate. If you keep
someone busy with his basic needs, he will forget about
freedom. We really view things differently. A single picture
doesn't have a single meaning because it's spectators have
different perspectives.

2. Watch the video on the definition of traditional/conventional literacy. Kindly open this
video link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1E5LTa3K8s. Give a short reflection after
watching. Submit your answer in our google classroom. 10 pts.

∙ What does the word “LITERACY” mean as depicted in the image given above and the
video that you have seen? Submit your answer in our google classroom. 10 pts.
Answer: Literacy is the most crucial ability for children of school age. It is vital to be able to read and
grasp what you are reading, as well as separate right from wrong and what works from what does not
work. Furthermore, media literacy, or understanding where messages are coming from and who is
providing them, is vital to a person's literacy education. Absolutely. In fact, the goal of education should
be to increase and enhance literacy in all areas of learning.

After reading Mrs. Santos’ essay, reflect on the following questions:

* Submit your answer in our google classroom. 10 pts. each

1. What are some of the changes in Philippine society described by Mrs. Santos?

Answer: I think the word "some" is an understatement because based on the essay I've
read, specifically on the first line, the Philippines accordingly has been characterized by
massive changes over the years. The root of these changes is political. And it makes sense
because we all know everything is political. A change in leadership can change a whole
country. And that's what happened to the Philippines. The different administrations
imparted a change in the economy, technology, environment and even in the smallest unit
of the society— the family.

2. What would be the possible effects of these changes on 21 st century education in

the Philippines?

Answer: Changes tell us that we're not staying in one place— that we're not stagnant.
However, not all changes equate to improvements. Some bring us backwards. The changes
in technology mentioned in the essay could help improve our education in the long run by
providing academes advanced learning tools to provide better learning experiences to the
students. Environmental changes may affect our education greatly if pollution worsen.
Climate change may cause discomfort to the learning environment of students and natural
disasters could destroy learning facilities that could lead to a suspension of classes.
Economic changes make the poor poorer and the wealthy wealthier. Our country, not just
our education sector, is moving and everyone's hoping it's going forward.

Read the questions and instructions carefully. Write your answers in the space provided.

1. Given the traditional/conventional concept of literacy, how literate are you?

Answer: In a scale of 1-10, I would rate myself as 10. I am a reader and a writer. That's why. I see beauty in
words and I read between the lines. Books became my escape from reality. But reading does not just give me
comfort, it also improved my vocabulary, my comprehension, and my communication skills. I believe I am
literate based on the traditional/conventional concept I've read in the module.

2. How deep is your level of comprehension?

Answer: I have confidence in my literary skills. I believe I have a high level of comprehension. I took BSED-
English for that reason. With my abilities, I think I'll be a competent teacher someday.

3. As a pre-service teacher, what kind of written materials should you be able to read and understand? Are you
reading these materials? How well can you understand them?
Answer: As a pre-service teacher, I should be able to read and understand any kind of written material as long
as it's written in a language that know. And yes, I am reading those materials— this module for example. I
understand learning materials very well and I try to even if sometimes I'm having difficulties. I still have a lot to
improve but I know I'm doing better. I believe studying given handouts, pdfs, and videos in my Google
classroom is part of my training. Because how can I be a good teacher if I can't be a good student?

Let’s find out how much you know about the expanded views of literacy in the
Philippines. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is wrong.

TRUE 1. Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their

goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their
community and wider society.
TRUE 2. Modern views equate literacy to knowledge.
TRUE 3. Social and Financial Literacy explores the need for the ability to navigate our own
social networks.
TRUE 4. Ecoliteracy, Artistic and Creative Literacy explore the emerging demands for
knowing how to effectively and sustainably manage the natural resources that our
increased industrialization and demands for productivity are so rapidly eating up.
TRUE 5. Globalzation and Multicultural Literacy discusses how our increasing ability to
communicate with almost anyone, anywhere, in real time requires new skills and
attitudes in interacting with people with cultures, perspectives, worldviews, and
priorities different from our own.
TRUE 6. Media and Cyber/Digital Literacy explore the emerging need to locate, verify, and
ultimately manage online information, especially in an age where information is power
and where having the right (and wrong) information and the ability to communicate it
with others and use it to address real-world problems easily spell the difference
between both personal and career success and failure.
TRUE 7. The three things that have been critical in the rise of the new literacies are: (1)
increased reach, (2) increased means of communication, and (3) increase breadth
content.

Share your answers with a learning partner. Prepare a summary of your shared
ideas and submit it in our google classroom. Make sure to write the name of your
partner. 20pts.

SUMMARY OF LESSONS:
Traditional Literacy:
1. Is the ability to read and write
2. Can be divided into sub-categories:
 Basic Literacy- is the ability to recognize letters and words
 Comprehension Literacy – is the ability to understand the meaning of what is
 being read; and
 Functional/Practical Literacy – is the ability to read written materials needed
to perform everyday vocational tasks.
Modern views of literacy equate it with knowledge
New literacies have risen due to increased reach, increased means of
communication, and increased breadth of content. These new literacies are
globalization and multicultural literacy, social and financial literacy, media and
cyber/digital literacy, ecoliteracy, artistic and creative literacy, and critical literacy.

Present a graphic organizer depicting the relationship of literacy (traditional views) to

21st century literacies (expanded views). Submit your answer in our google classroom. 20
pts.
Would you like to find out how much you have learned from this module? Answer the
following questions and make sure to provide a short explanation of your choice. Submit
your answer in our google classroom. 10 pts. each
1. Who among the following teachers are NOT in tune with 21st century education?

a. Ms. Amina, a science teacher, taught a unit on medicinal plants. She brought her
students to a nearby community herbal garden, where the students became more
familiar with the different kinds of herbs and their uses for various ailments.

b. Mr. Tum helped his fourth grade students to set up a simple Webquest on how
people from different countries say common phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” or
“good day” in their own language. This way, his students were able to connect with
students from different races and cultures and learn from them.

c. Mrs. Singh is very knowledgeable about the subject matter that she is teaching. This
is the reason her students sometimes refer to her as a “walking encyclopedia.”
Thus, in the classroom, she usually serves as the primary dispenser of information
and knowledge to her students.

d. Mr. Boon collaborates with his co-teachers on a thematic unit about water. In
science, the students learned how water forms and the importance of the water
cycle. In math, they tried to convert units used to measure liquid, e.g., from
milliliter (mL) to liter (L). In English class, they composed a poem about water.
The students had fun learning about water!

Letter of your answer: C

Explanation: 21st century education should be Learner-centered and not Teacher-centered

2. The following situations exemplifies the new parameters of teaching and learning in the
21st century. Select the situation that matches the new parameter of teaching and learning.
Take note that an item may have more than one correct match, since the new parameters
of teaching and learning in the 21st century are closely interlinked with one another.

I. Mrs. Reyes observed that her students are very adept at using computers in the
classroom. Some of them are even more techno-savvy than she is.

a. new environment of learning c. new process of learning

b. new content of learning d. new types of learners
e. new spaces/ dimensions of learning
