∙ What does the word “LITERACY” mean as depicted in the image given above and the
video that you have seen? Submit your answer in our google classroom. 10 pts.
Answer: Literacy is the most crucial ability for children of school age. It is vital to be able to read and
grasp what you are reading, as well as separate right from wrong and what works from what does not
work. Furthermore, media literacy, or understanding where messages are coming from and who is
providing them, is vital to a person's literacy education. Absolutely. In fact, the goal of education should
be to increase and enhance literacy in all areas of learning.
1. What are some of the changes in Philippine society described by Mrs. Santos?
Answer: I think the word "some" is an understatement because based on the essay I've
read, specifically on the first line, the Philippines accordingly has been characterized by
massive changes over the years. The root of these changes is political. And it makes sense
because we all know everything is political. A change in leadership can change a whole
country. And that's what happened to the Philippines. The different administrations
imparted a change in the economy, technology, environment and even in the smallest unit
of the society— the family.
Answer: Changes tell us that we're not staying in one place— that we're not stagnant.
However, not all changes equate to improvements. Some bring us backwards. The changes
in technology mentioned in the essay could help improve our education in the long run by
providing academes advanced learning tools to provide better learning experiences to the
students. Environmental changes may affect our education greatly if pollution worsen.
Climate change may cause discomfort to the learning environment of students and natural
disasters could destroy learning facilities that could lead to a suspension of classes.
Economic changes make the poor poorer and the wealthy wealthier. Our country, not just
our education sector, is moving and everyone's hoping it's going forward.
Read the questions and instructions carefully. Write your answers in the space provided.
Submit your answer in our google classroom. 5 pts. each .
3. As a pre-service teacher, what kind of written materials should you be able to read and understand? Are you
reading these materials? How well can you understand them?
Answer: As a pre-service teacher, I should be able to read and understand any kind of written material as long
as it's written in a language that know. And yes, I am reading those materials— this module for example. I
understand learning materials very well and I try to even if sometimes I'm having difficulties. I still have a lot to
improve but I know I'm doing better. I believe studying given handouts, pdfs, and videos in my Google
classroom is part of my training. Because how can I be a good teacher if I can't be a good student?
Let’s find out how much you know about the expanded views of literacy in the
Philippines. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is wrong.
Share your answers with a learning partner. Prepare a summary of your shared
ideas and submit it in our google classroom. Make sure to write the name of your
partner. 20pts.
SUMMARY OF LESSONS:
Traditional Literacy:
1. Is the ability to read and write
2. Can be divided into sub-categories:
Basic Literacy- is the ability to recognize letters and words
Comprehension Literacy – is the ability to understand the meaning of what is
being read; and
Functional/Practical Literacy – is the ability to read written materials needed
to perform everyday vocational tasks.
Modern views of literacy equate it with knowledge
New literacies have risen due to increased reach, increased means of
communication, and increased breadth of content. These new literacies are
globalization and multicultural literacy, social and financial literacy, media and
cyber/digital literacy, ecoliteracy, artistic and creative literacy, and critical literacy.
a. Ms. Amina, a science teacher, taught a unit on medicinal plants. She brought her
students to a nearby community herbal garden, where the students became more
familiar with the different kinds of herbs and their uses for various ailments.
b. Mr. Tum helped his fourth grade students to set up a simple Webquest on how
people from different countries say common phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” or
“good day” in their own language. This way, his students were able to connect with
students from different races and cultures and learn from them.
c. Mrs. Singh is very knowledgeable about the subject matter that she is teaching. This
is the reason her students sometimes refer to her as a “walking encyclopedia.”
Thus, in the classroom, she usually serves as the primary dispenser of information
and knowledge to her students.
d. Mr. Boon collaborates with his co-teachers on a thematic unit about water. In
science, the students learned how water forms and the importance of the water
cycle. In math, they tried to convert units used to measure liquid, e.g., from
milliliter (mL) to liter (L). In English class, they composed a poem about water.
The students had fun learning about water!
I. Mrs. Reyes observed that her students are very adept at using computers in the
classroom. Some of them are even more techno-savvy than she is.
II. Ms. Duyen enrolled in an online course to complete her graduate degree in education.
This way, she gets professional development opportunities, even without attending
a regular, face-to-face class.
a. new environment of learning c. new process of learning
b. new content of learning d. new types of learners
e. new spaces/ dimensions of learning
Explanation: Shifting from face-to-face to online classes entails a new environment and
requires a new process of learning
III. Mr. Sing uses computer-based simulation games in his Social Science class. This
strategy enables his students to design various real-life scenarios and experience
them through games and realize various possible results of different actions.
a. new environment of learning c. new process of learning
b. new content of learning d. new types of learners
e. new spaces/ dimensions of learning
Explanation: The situation portrays an effective and advanced level of teaching thus, it
entails a new environment, content, space, process and types of learning.
4. Ms. Sheba brought her third grade class to a nearby zoo. Since their science lesson is on
mammals, she asked them to list all the mammals in the zoo. Beyond helping them gain
more knowledge about mammals, she facilitated the students’ learning on the importance
of protecting and preserving them.
a. new environment of learning c. new process of learning
b. new content of learning d. new types of learners
e. new spaces/ dimensions of learning
Explanation: Going to a zoo rather than having lectures on a four-walled room is a better
learning experience for students. Also, teaching them more than what's in the lesson plan gives
them a new content of learning.
5. Mr. Gam helped his students set up an e-group where they can collaborate on their
research project. The students share references and materials useful for their study by
uploading them in their e-group. Here, they also discuss questions and get feedback from
Mr. Gam.
a. new environment of learning c. new process of learning
b. new content of learning d. new types of learners
e. new spaces/ dimensions of learning
Explanation: Turning from the traditional approach of teaching means having a new
environment for learners.
