Jumpstart

Making an inference is an important skill in understanding a

text because authors often do not state themes and ideas
directly. A good reader makes a reaction or conclusions based on
characters’ feelings, thoughts and actions.

Let us read the following text.

Last January, Secretary Francisco Duque said coronavirus
spread is slowing down in our country. “But we will not be
complacent. We’ve seen what happened in other countries where
the number of cases spiked again. We just keep fighting,” says
the secretary.

What does Secretary Duque mean by that?

To make proper inferences about the passage, let us use the
KWL chart.
What I Read? What I Know? What I infer?

Based on text evidences and your own experiences, you are able
to come up with your own inference and conclusion on the
matter.

Learning Circuit

Making an inference involves using what you know to

make a guess about what you don’t know or reading between
the lines. Readers who make inference use the clues in the text
along with their own experiences to help them figure out what
is the text or story is all about.

The sun was shining brightly. The

children were enjoying their game of
patintero. They didn’t seem to mind the
heart of the sun. Several women were
hanging clothes would dry fast.

Later, the sun no longer shone brightly. The clouds became

dark. Big, black clouds seemed to be hanging from the sky. The
air seemed moist. Claps of thunder followed.

What happened next?

A. It rained a little.
B. The sun shone again.
C. There was a thunderstorm.

evidences from knowledge and to make an
the story your own inference or
experiences conclusion about
the story

First, let us find the clues or evidences used in the text we read.
Then, let us combine them to what we already know so we are be
able to infer and conclude.

What would be our inference or conclusion? Let us go back to the

question.
What happened next?
A. It rained a little.
B. The sun shone again.
C. There was a thunderstorm.

The answer is letter C. There was a thunderstorm. Why?

Based on what we read. The clouds became dark and claps of
thunder followed. These are signs of bad weather. Therefore, we
can conclude that there was a thunderstorm.

An inference is an intelligent or logical guess about something

or someone in a story. We infer based on clues presented in a
story and what we know from previous experiences. It is a
reaction or conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and
reasoning.
