The Mr.

Men and Little Miss series was created in 1971 by the British author and cartoonist
Roger Hargreaves. Roger Hargreaves died in 1988 but his son Adam Hargreaves has
continued to create stories in the series. Although many people believe it is a series just for
children, the characters are popular with a multi-generational audience, that is people of all
ages. Roger Hargreaves used humor, color, simple images and self-expression to connect with
his audience.

Task 1
Visit the website and watch the short video of the Mr. Men and Little Misses talking about
hobbies.

As you watch and listen, identify and list the hobbies mentioned in the video.

Discuss these hobbies with a partner or group and decide which ones are the most fun, the
least interesting and the most challenging.

Create a word cloud using www.wordclouds.com or www.wordle.net You can shape your word
cloud to match your chosen hobby and include descriptive words or phrases to go with the
hobby or hobbies.

Task 2
A questionnaire is a set of questions created to collect information on a given topic. The
questionnaire can be completed individually or as part of an interview.

To find out how to conduct a questionnaire go here.

In pairs, or groups of three, design a mini questionnaire on how your classmates spend their
spare time, the interests they have and how they choose their hobbies.

You can use various sources to help you prepare the questions for your questionnaires. Start by
brainstorming questions in your pairs or groups and look at the examples below to help you.
Combine the best questions as a class to make a questionnaire.

How do students spend their spare time:

● What do you do in your free time?

Ask other students in your school to complete the questionnaire and collect the information.

Write a paragraph to synthesize the results of the questionnaire.

Interpret the data that you have collected on hobbies and interests in your school. Are there any
trends? How many clubs and activities are offered in your school as a part of the extra-curricular
programme? How can you use the information from your questionnaire to make suggestions for
new activities in your school?

Extension
Now, on your own, use Google or another search engine to find out about activities and
pastimes in different cultures. Search for (name of country) hobbies or leisure. Why not start
with your own culture first? Then find out how young people spend their spare time in other
parts of the world.

Share your information with a partner group, and interpret and analyse the facts together. Can
you agree on which activity is the most interesting? Make sure you can explain why you like it
best?
