Objective: Describe the story heard using simple sentences.

Simple Sentence
A simple sentence is a sentence that consists of just one independent clause. A simple
sentence has no dependent clauses. (An independent clause (unlike a dependent clause) can stand
alone as a sentence.)
Examples of Simple Sentences
 I cannot drink warm milk.
 A day without sunshine is like night.
 Only the mediocre are always at their best.
 Reality continues to ruin my life.

Listen to your teacher (or parent/guardian) as she read the story “The Bee”.

The Bee
Bees live in a house that is called a hive. There are
three kinds of bees: workers, drones, and queens. Only
one queen bee can live in each hive. If she is lost or
dead, the other bees will stop their work. Bees are very
wise and busy little creatures. They all join together to
build cells of wax for their honey. Each bee takes its
proper place and does its own work. Some go out and
gather honey from the flowers; others stay at home and
work inside the hive. The cells which they build are all
of one shape and size, and no room is left between them. The cells are not round. They have six sides. Did
you ever look into a glass hive to see the bees while at work? It is pleasant to see how busy they always are.
But the drones do not work. Before winter comes, all the drones are driven from the hive so that they don’t
eat the honey which they did not gather. It is not safe for children to handle bees. Bees have a painful sting
that they use in their defense.

Compound Sentence
A compound sentence is a sentence with at least two independent clauses. An independent clause
(unlike a dependent clause) can stand alone as a sentence.
Examples of Compound Sentences

 Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about
the former.
 There used to be a real me, but I had it surgically removed.
 Go, and never darken my towels again. (Note: Go is the shortest sentence in English.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An
Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"
"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant
went on its way and continued its toil.
When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger - while it saw the ants
distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the
Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.

And now Tintin is mad.
“You can‟t have my mat!”
she says to Bimbim.

Bimbim is sad.
He does not want the red mat.

- Because, Tintin got mad. She doesn’t want Tintin to get mad. She just wants to
play with her.

- I like Bimbim because shes a playful cat.

Honest Kiko

Kiko and his parents live in the mountainous borders of Oriental and Occidental
Mindoro. After school, Kiko keeps watching
over the cows grazing on the slopes of the mountains. Farther, below his father is
plowing a dry piece of land where he grows rice for his family. Ath the foor of the
mountain, in a small hut where they live,Kiko often picures his mother cooking in the
kitchen. In his mind, he sees her going out once in a while to fee sme chickens in
small coop near the hut. Kiko sells the chicken eggs along the highway. He is saving
money to buy an old bicycle. A merchant is willing to sell his old bicycle to Kilko.
One day, the merchant paid too much for the eggs he bought. Kiko realized the
mistake too late. The man had gone to a faraway village to sell his goods. Kiko waited
for the man in the lonely highway until late that night. For his honesty, the merchant
rewarded Kiko with the bycicle.
