Have you ever heard of an animal who’s trying to find a
solution to its problem? Do you know that people are not the
only living creatures that encounter difficulties in life? Find out
from the following story.

The Crow and the Pitcher


One day, there is a thirsty crow who wanted some water
to drink. He looked for a well but couldn’t find any. Then,
he saw a pitcher beside the road. There was a little
amount of water at the bottom of the pitcher. He tried to
drink from it but could not reach the water. He sat down
to think about how he can drink the water. Then, he saw
some small stones by the road. He smiled and said to
himself,” I know what to do”. One by one, he got the
stones and dropped them into the pitcher. The water in
the pitcher rose a little higher every time he dropped a
stone. Soon, the water reached the top of the pitcher. The
crow drank the water happily.
Let’s talk about it:
1. Who is the character in the story?
2. When did the story happen?
3. What is the problem of the character?
4. What did he saw beside the road?
5. What did the crow do?
6. Why did he put the stones in the
pitcher?
7. What happened at the end?
A story tells what happens. It also tells how the
characters react and solves the problem. Short story
is a form of brief literary work commonly written in
narrative prose and usually shorter than a novel. It
may be written in different formats. It may be fiction
or non-fiction. Fairy tales, fables, and parables are
examples of imaginary or fictional short stories.
In order for you to write a short story, you need to
know and understand its elements first. This
knowledge will assist you in writing your own short
story.
A short story has elements. These are the following:
Characters- these are the people or the animals in
the story. In this part, you need to see in your
imagination the characters that you want to have in
your story.
Setting- this tells us the place or time that the
events in the story happened. Some of the story
beginnings that you can use are:
- A long time ago/ Long ago
- Once upon a time
- In a faraway (place) ex. castle, land, town
Plot- is the sequence of events in the story.
Plot has three parts, namely:
Beginning- it is the introduction of the story. It gives the
problem faced by the lead character or the characters.
Middle- it presents the actions made by the characters to
solve the problem.
Ending- it is the final part of the story. It usually gives a
solution to the problem.
These elements can serve as an outline in writing a short
story. Once you’ve learned the elements, you can start
writing your draft. The more you practice, the more you’ll
expand your craft.

The Lion and the Mouse


There was a lion sleeping in the forest. A little mouse
running up and down the lion awakened him. The lion was
about to eat the mouse when the little mouse cried,
“Forgive me this time. Someday I may be able to help you”.
The lion laughed at the idea of the mouse helping him but
he set him free.
A week later, a group of hunters sets a trap in the forest.
The lion was caught in a trap. The hunters tied him to a
tree and left to look for a cart to carry him. The little
mouse came and gnawed the rope. The lion was set free.
