Response to Patient’s Privacy and Health Data

Hello Madison Peltzer,

I feel that the information in this

For my signature assignment project, the topic that was chosen was that of patient’s health

data and privacy. Honestly, before this class I had no idea what healthcare informatics was.

Something that I have always wondered to myself is how our health data protected is and what goes

in to protecting this data. I started with using a basic google search. This search yielded many results

for this topic with no problem comprehending the wording for the articles. One article that caught

my attention is that of the CDC where they explained the Health Insurance Portability and

Accountability Act or better known as HIPPA. This act states that sensitive information regarding

patient health data is protected and prevents health information from being disclosed unless patient

gives consent (CDC.gov, 2022). The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is extremely

important as it allows the flow of patient’s health information to improve quality of care while also

maintaining appropriate privacy (CDC.gov, 2022). This article also lays out who must comply with

these standards. These include health care providers, health plans, healthcare clearinghouses, and

other business associates involved in claims processing, data analysis, and billing (CDC.gov, 2022).  

The next article that was found that was helpful with my search was that of patients

expressing health data privacy concerns. The American Medical Association conducted a survey of

1,000 patients in which 90 percent expressed concerned over there private health data (McKeon,

2022). The American Medical Association also expressed concern that patients’ private health

information is increasingly vulnerable, and that digital patient data is being shared beyond the HIPPA

guidelines without federal privacy (McKeon, 2022). I plan on further researching this topic to see if

this data is actually being shared beyond HIPPA guidelines. This search has yielded many great results

and I can’t wait to start digging deeper into this topic.
