Basketball

1. Make a timeline History of Philippine Basketball from the year it originated up to

the present time. (Philippine Setting only)

The Philippines were originally a Spanish colony however, following the Spanish-
American War the Philippines were transferred to the United States. Although the
Philippines became an independent country in 1946, the five decades of United
States rule brought significant changes to the Philippines including the
introduction of basketball.

Teachers who had traveled from America to the Philippines introduced basketball
to the school system and the game of basketball began to spread across the
nation.

The Philippines basketball team took part in the Far Eastern Games which ran
from 1913-1934. The Philippines were dominant in the games winning 9 Golds
out of ten games. With 1921 being the only year when the Philippines Basketball
team did not win the gold medal.

In 1936 basketball was listed as an Olympic sport for the first time. The
Philippines entered a men’s basketball team for the games and finished fifth in
the games following a 4-1 record. Their only loss coming against the United
States of in the quarter finals of the competition. The Philippines beat the
following teams on the way to the fifth position.

In 1951 the first Asian games were held, and the Philippines entered a basketball
team and ended up winning the gold medal. The Philippines basketball team
retained the Gold medal at the 1954 Asian Games. After the disappointment of
the 1956 Olympic Games the Philippines bounced back in 1958 with another
Asian Games Basketball medal. The Philippines won a gold medal again in 1962.
2. What are the basic skills to learn in the game? Describe each skill.

a. Shooting – it is considered the most specialized technique of any of the

five fundamental skills. In order to score points and be an effective
offensive player in the game of basketball, you need to be able to shoot
the ball into the hoop.

b. Dribbling - the act of moving the ball across the floor by a player. If a
player walks around the court with the ball, it is considered a traveling
violation.

c. Passing - the technical skill that brings the individual players together and
builds them into a team. All teams within their offense use passing to
move the ball and probe for weaknesses in the defensive team's armor.

d. Rebounding – it occurs when a basketball player misses a shot attempt.

As the ball rebounds or bounces off the rim or backboard of the net. The
players from the offensive and defensive teams try to gain possession of
the ball and score a field goal, three-point goal, or free throw.

3. Give at least 3 simple rules in playing the game in the following skills:

a. Dribbling
 You can dribble anywhere on the court as long as you stay
inbounds
 You must only use one hand at a time
 You cannot stop dribbling and then start again

b. Passing
 Players can pass from anywhere on the court as long as they stay
inbounds
 Players cannot pass from the frontcourt to the backcourt.
 There is no limit on how hard a player can throw the ball.

c. Shooting
 The free throw shooter cannot purposely fake a free throw attempt
 The free throw shooter may not step over the plane of the free
throw line until the ball touches the basket ring, backboard or the
free throw ends
 If a player is fouled while in the act of shooting and the ball went in
the basket, the player is given a free throw

d. Rebounding
 If a player takes a shot and misses and the ball bounces on the
ground before someone picks it up, then the person who picks up
the ball is credited for a rebound
 A rebound is credited to a team when it gains possession of the ball
after any missed shot that is not cleared by a single player
 Every missed shot must be rebounded whether a single player
controls the ball or not.
