 It was formerly called Indoor softball (inside
gymnasiums during the winter)
 It was called Softball in 1933 when the Amateur
Softball Association was established, and was followed
by a National Tournament at the World’s Fair in
Chicago.
 Many believed that Abner Doubleday invented the
game of baseball, and the first match was held at
Coperstown, New York in 1859.
 The sport became popular during the Civil War.
 American troops introduced the game of softball to the
Filipinos, and it was called indoor baseball.
 The game was intended for women, and became the
number one sport among women in the Bicol region
and the Visayas
 The Philippines took the lead in introducing indoor
baseball, to other Asian countries, such as Japan and
China.
 Girls’ teams were sent in Far Eastern Games in
Shanghai. China to demonstrate the game.
 The Little League Baseball team, became very popular
that play against team in the US.
A team in Softball/baseball is composed of nine
players designated as follows:
1. Pitcher
2. Catcher
3. First baseman
4. Second baseman
5. Third baseman
6. Shortstop
7. Left fielder
8. Center fielder
9. Right fielder
Aside from the nine players, 3 substitute players for a total of 12
players are included in a team.

a. First Base
After batting the ball, the runner must reach the first base swiftly; steps
on its outside part and may reach the foul territory because of his/her speed.
After stopping, the runner should return to the base.

Note: A player must be able to hit the ball hard enough in order to reach the First
Base, Second Base, the Third Base , and up to Home Base.

b. Second Base
A runner going to the 2nd Base should not go beyond the base. A runner
has to utilize holding action in order for him/her not to go beyond the base.

c. Third Base
A runner going to the Third Base should not also go beyond the base.

d. Home Plate
A runner should run without slowing down until he/she reaches the
home plate.
1. The bat should not be held tightly. Arms should
be relaxed.
2. The bat should be held at the shoulder level
and positioned at the backside.
3. The bat should be held upright with the arms
away from the body.
4. Be sure nobody will be hit when swinging the
bat.
5. Before running, be sure to drop the bat at the
batter’s box.
