Baseball
• The game of baseball was first played by the
Americans. It was formerly called indoor
softball, because it was played by players
inside gymnasiums during the winter. It was
called Softball in 1933 when the Amateur
Softball Association was established, and was
followed by a National Tournament at the
World’s Fair Chicago.
Many believed that Abner
Doubleday invented the
game of baseball and the
first match was held at
Coperstown, New York in
1859. The sport became
popular during the Civil War
in the United States. Several
Leagues were formed in
every big city of the state. Abner
Doubleday
American troops introduced
the game of softball to the
Filipinos, and it was called
indoor baseball. Initially, it was
a game intended for girls. It
soon became the number one
sport among women in the
Bicol region and the Visayas,
and until now it is included as
one of the major sports in the
country.
The Philippines took the lead
in introducing indoor baseball
to other Asian countries such
as Japan and China. Girls’
teams were send in Far Eastern
Games in Shanghai, China to
demonstrate the game. The
Little League Baseball team
became popular that play
