SteelD Steel Design

Analysis and Design of Tension Members

Instruction: Answer the following questions showing complete analysis.

1. Determine the critical net width for the staggered bolted connection
shown in the figure. The diameter of the bolts is 19 mm. use depth 4y
= 200 mm. Determine also the value of “x” that will make the Path A-
B-C-D-E critical.

2. For the figure shown, calculate the net area of the

10 x 200 mm plate. The plate is connected at its
end with two lines of 20 mm bolts. Using LRFD,
determine the load P that the plates can carry
against tensile yielding in the gross section and
the tensile rupture in the net section. Use A-36
steel.

3. 4-22 mm diameter bolts are used in a staggered bolted

connection as shown in the figure. Calculate the value of “x”
such that the net width in chain A-B-C-D is equal to the net
width of the chain A-B-D.

4. From the preceding problem, determine the ultimate tensile

force Pu that the bolted connection could carry against
tensile rupture in the net section. Use A-50 steel and LRFD.

5. Angle bars are used for the determinate truss as shown in the figure. Horizontal and vertical members are
L6X4X1/2. Diagonal members are L5x3x3x1/4. Determine the adequacy of Members AB and BC based on factor
loads as shown. Bolt diameters = 22 mm. Use A-36 Steel.
