Selecting the Right Tool for the Task

A first-aid incident was reported regarding inflation of a wheel barrow tyre. The tyre was inflated
using an airline attached to a compressed air pump of a dump truck without a pressure gauge.
During investigation, the worker over inflated the tyre caused the wheel rim to deformed and
dislodged the tyre.

Selecting and using the “right tool for the task” is the main key to achieving a safe and quality work
outcome. An appropriate tool such as a foot pump or bicycle pump must be used instead of
compressed air without pressure gauge to control the risk of over inflation.

Teams must ensure that compressed airlines must be fitted with a pressure gauge and only be used
to inflate tyre on road vehicles or wheeled construction plant.

Tools will be used only for their intended purpose.

In pressurizing wheel tyre do not use compressor line without the proper safety gauges. Use the proper
tool for the task.
