ABSTRACT

This paper is a research report on the 'use of Internet by Secondary Level Students for
Educational Purpose.' This report / study aim to examine how the Internet is exploited
as an educational resource by Gaindakot City Schools and students.

In this study student of class 9 and 10 were surveyed at three different schools: Nepal
Rastriya Shumsher Ma VI (NRSMV), Shree Janak Ma VI (SJMV) and Namuna
Secondary School (NSS) of Gaindakot City which were nearby distance with each
other. Participants answered questions regarding their access to and use of the Internet
and more specifically about their use of the Internet for Educational and other purpose.
By this research it was found that most of the students use Smartphone and have
access to the Internet at home where still few of the students were unable to afford
device/Smartphone and Internet.

Similarly, students who had access to Internet and Smartphone, most of them were
using it for other purpose where fewer were using only for educational purpose. So, we
can say that the students likely view the internet as a medium of entertainment, not an
educational resource.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

1.1 General Background

Access to the Internet is now found everywhere in industrialized western

countries, yet many people in less economically developed have never used or
even heard of the internet. A prime example can be taken to the Nepal, where in
2014 only 15 % of the population used the Internet (Worldbank, January 29,
2016). I have also personally witnessed a digital divide between the
people/Internet users in Nepal. The Internet users in Nepal are limited to a certain
geographic location, economic class, social status and age group. Among
different users/people students were also one of the groups who actively use the
Internet. Furthermore, lots of students in Nepal who have Internet access are not
aware of the capabilities of the internet. It is mostly used by the students for social
media and video sharing. Similarly Interesting fact is that the Internet users have
been steadily increasing in Nepal over the past six years. The reason for this rapid
growth might be the evolution of social media such as facebook, youtube, tiktok
and other platforms. As these platform has attracted many of the students. Apart
from this in today's era internet is also mostly used for educational purpose by
students. In fact, populations are not only divided according to whether they have
access to digital technologies, but also according to their skills, knowledge and
ability to exploit them (wikipedia free encyclopedia, January 29, 2016). Education
is a crucial determinant in this respect, which is one of the reason I choose to
explore Internet use in an educational setting.

1.2 Objectives Of The Study

The objectives of the study are as follow:

1. To find out the purpose of Internet used by secondary level students.

2. To find out their closeness towards the Internet and Smartphone/other devices
in teaching learning process.

1.3 Limitations Of The Study

The study had the following limitations:

1. The study focused on the Internet use by secondary level of students.

2. It was limited to specific schools and students of Gaindakot city.
3. The data were collected only through the use of a set of questionaires
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Review of Theoretical Literature

Once the study topic was decided upon, I searched for literature on the
internet about similar studies and relevant projects which have been done in
the past. I read papers on different studies about the use of Internet and other
relevant topics. This section mentions short description about the important
concepts of literature sources which are relevant to internet uses for student
learning outcomes.

2.1.1 Internet Use

The use of internet grants its users great awareness of the importance
of the world around them. The internet is a platform for several types of
information. Internet use will continue to grow as long as its users are not
denied easy access (olatokun, 2012). Recent statistics indicate that the
internet gives people the option to access information sites as well as other
sites such as social media sites, internet games and cyber sex (siraj, 2015). A
study by (Ellore, 2014) on the influence of internet use on academic
performance and face to face communication revealed that as a result of the
availability of internet, most students have had access to internet on their
cellphones. These help students to broaden their academic information (Siraj,
2015) the use of computer and access to online resources according to
(Bamise, 2017) are comparatively important to students.

2.1.2 Time Spent On the Internet

It has been recently reported that adolescents today spend a significant

amount of their time on the internet for multiple purposes (ogedebe D &, 2012)
evidence about the excessive internet use has been associated with problems
of maintaining daily routines, school performance and family relationships. A
study conducted by (Dowler, 2016) on college students technology use and
academic performance indicated that upperclass men spent significantly more
time using technology for academic and work related purposes, whereas
underclass men spent more time using cell phones, online chatting and social
networking. Facebook users and non users reported comparable average daily
internet use and the highest category endorsed was between 1 and 2 hours
per day. However facebook users were regarding lower GPA and spending few
hours per week studying on average
