STEEL STANDARDS
 ASTM.
 EN ISO.
 AISI/SAE.
 UNS.
 CSA.
 BS – DIN …
 JIS

COMPARING STEEL

 Equivalent:
 Mechanical.
 Chemical.

 Physical.

 Comparable.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
OF STEEL

 Carbon: 0.1 to 0.3 %.

 Manganese: 0.5 to 1.3 %.
 Silicon: up to 0.4 %.
 Phosphorous and sulfur: up to 0.05 %.
 Other components up to 0.7 %:
 Copper.
 Nickel.
 Chromium.
 Molybdenum.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
OF STEEL

 Stress-strain curve:
 Yield stress.
 Tensile strength.

RULES FOR COMPARISON

 Mechanical or chemical properties?

 Which mechanical property: yield stress,
tensile strength, elongation, impact strength,
hardness, ...?
 Only one criterion, or a primary criterion and
a secondary one?

TYPICAL
COMPARISON RULES
 Tensile strength.
 Yield stress.
 Carbon content (more carbon = higher
strength and less ductility).
 Elongation.
 Hardness.

ASTM Designation System

ASTM A 582M-95b (2000), Grade 303Se

 “A” stands for “ferrous metals”, not only steel.
 582 is just a sequential number, has nothing to
do with the properties of the metal.
 “M” is for SI units (metric).
 “95” is the year of adoption or last revision.
 “b” indicates that it is the third revision.
 (2000) is the year of last re-approval.
 “Grade 303Se” indicates the grade of steel. In
this case, it has a selenium addition.
