The first Mary H. Alexander Scholarship

(formerly Alpha Tau Scholarship) was
awarded to Deborah Hankins on February 2,
2019.
Chapter members pursuing post-graduate
studies are eligible to apply for this
scholarship.

Through the scholarship that Alpha Tau

provided, Deborah completed her Ed.S in
Early Childhood Education at the University
of West Alabama in December 2021.

Deborah has been able to apply what she has

learned to meet the evolving needs of her K-
3rd grade students.

Deborah has used that knowledge to help convert research into applied strategies to not
only help her students but to share it with other teachers who are welcome to observe in her
classroom. She combines this training, along with her Multisensory Structured Literacy
Education training, to utilize new strategies and pinpoint what is effective literacy
instruction. She believes that all her students have benefited from the training she received.
