ABSTRACT

Every student of Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering, has an essential

requirement to do 31 days of internship in any of the well reputed organization. The purpose

of this program is to acquaint the students with practical applications of theoretical concepts

taught to them during conduct of their course.

Really, it was a nice opportunity to have a close comparison of theoretical concept in

practical field. I got the opportunity to share my ideas as a Manufacturing intern and Lead

production intern. Also got opportunity to explore as procurement tracker and understood

different sides of startup, which dreamt off.

The output of my analysis is summarized in a shape of Internship report the contents of the

CHAPTER 2: RAW MATERIALS

Raw materials are materials or substances used in the primary production or manufacturing

of goods. Raw materials are commodities that are bought and sold on commodities

exchanges worldwide. Traders buy and sell raw materials in the factor market because raw

materials are factors of production, as are labor and capital. Raw materials are used in a

multitude of products and can take many different forms. Raw materials are the input goods

or inventory that a company needs to manufacture its products. For example, the steel used

to manufacture vehicles would be a raw material for an automobile manufacturer. For

manufacturing companies, raw materials inventory requires detailed budgeting and aspecial

framework for accounting on the balance sheet and income statement.

Raw materials can be direct raw materials, which are directly used in the manufacturing

process, such as wood for a chair. Indirect raw materials are not part of the final product

but are instead used comprehensively in the production process.

CHAPTER 3: PLANO-MILLING

Plano Milling Machine is widely used in industries for precise shaping of metals & various

solid materials. The planner milling machine is mostly used for facing operations in mass

production. These machines are similar to the bed-type mill machine, except they can be

mounted with various cutters and spindle heads to the machine. These cutters in the

machines can perform the facing operations simultaneously which is a great function.

A planer machine is just like a shaper machine but, it is very large and massive and it is

capable of machining heavy jobs which can’t be done by the shaper. The main difference

between planer and shaper is that in a planer, the work is loaded over the table and

reciprocates past the stationary cutting tool and the feed is given by the lateral movement

of the tool but in shaper, the ram holding the tool reciprocates over the stationary work

loaded over the table and feed is given by the crosswise movement of the table.

Planer Machine Main Parts:

A planer machine consists of the following parts:

BED, Table or Planten, Housing or Column, Cross rail, Tool head, Driving and, Feed

Mechanism

3.1 ANGLED PLANO-MILLING TO PERFORM CHAMFER

Chamfer angles are often assumed to be the same angle as the tool used to generate them.

The most common chamfer angle is 45 degrees. Depending on the part geometry, different

tools can be used to measure a chamfer’s angle. The angle can be calculated using the

triangle calculator referenced above or a protractor can be used.

CHAPTER 4: SAND BLASTING MACHINE

Sand blasting machine are designed to blast media like glass beads, aluminum oxide

through a nozzle by means of compressed air provided by an air compressor. Essentially,

Sand Blasting is the most economical and efficient way of preparing surfaces such as metal

by removing rust or dirt or other deposits simply with the use of an air compressor.

Compressed air provides the fuel for sandblasting machines with forces the abrasive

materials to flow with high speeds and hit the surface to remove rust or dirt or other deposits

and contaminants. The more pressure a sand blaster produces, the more intense would be

the hitting rate of blast media against the metal surface and better cleaning could be

achieved but excessively harsh sandblasting will cause harm to a variety of materials.

It is rare for actual sand to be used in abrasive blasting these days because of the potential

health, environmental and safety risks. Instead, powdery abrasive materials known as blast

media and fine items such as Glass beads, Aluminum oxide, Copper Slag and Steel Shots

or Grits are used for sandblasting purpose. These fine abrasive media extremely effective

for cleansing, deburring, descaling, smoothen, shining and etching of various metal

surfaces in automotive components as well as construction equipment.

Fig 4.1 Fig 4.2

5
4.1 PAINTING OR SPRAYING PRIMER TO AVOID RUSTING
AFTER SAND BLASTING

Sandblasting is performed on virtually any metal object, from patio furniture to car parts,

and creates a smooth surface due to the abrasive qualities of the sand. After sandblasting,

the metal object must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all traces of dirt and grease as well

as residual traces of sand that will interfere with the paint.

The clean, rust-free metal that remains needs to be treated as soon as possible after abrasive

blasting. This prevents re-rusting (which will occur rapidly if any moisture is present).

Prevention is always better than a cure, and once we remove the rust, we always

recommend taking the necessary measure to avoid a recurrence. By using a protective

coating on your metal parts, you can ensure that they are protected from oil or grease.

You can apply the acid solution with an old paintbrush or rag. Just douse it on liberally,

and let it run into seams and crevices. When the acid dries, the metal surfaces with have a

dull gray color. If you need to store the parts temporarily before painting, place them in a

dry a location as possible.

If longer storage is planned, the parts should be primed with a non-lacquer-based primer.

A lacquer-based primer allows moisture to penetrate the metal’s surface, causing re-

rusting.

CHAPTER 5: METAL ARC WELDING

Arc welding is a type of welding process using an electric arc to create heat to melt and join

metals. A power supply creates an electric arc between a consumable or non-consumable

electrode and the base material using either direct (DC) or alternating (AC) currents.

Arc welding is a fusion welding process used to join metals. An electric arc from an AC or

DC power supply creates an intense heat of around 6500°F which melts the metal at the

join between two work pieces.

Fig 5.1

The arc can be either manually or mechanically guided along the line of the join, while the

electrode either simply carries the current or conducts the current and melts into the weld

pool at the same time to supply filler metal to the join.

Because the metals react chemically to oxygen and nitrogen in the air when heated to high

temperatures by the arc, a protective shielding gas or slag is used to minimize the contact

of the molten metal with the air. Once cooled, the molten metals solidify to form a

metallurgical bond.

7
5.1 GRINDING OF SHARP EDGES FORMED BY WELDING

Angle grinders are welding tools commonly found in metal fabrication and other types of

metalworking shops. They are handheld power tools with consumable stone discs or blades

attached them. These discs or blades spin at high speeds to grind, polish or cut metals.

Several disc sizes and amperages are available.

Spatter can be cleaned up by grinding, although this can be time consuming. However, if

you need to use an angle grinder as part of your finishing work, it may well be worth taking

the effort to just tidy up any spatter at the same time.
