Written Report

In completing the written report for the English School Based Assessment portfolio, our

group was formed because our members have similar interest. We chose the topic “Crime and

Violence” and came together by gathering information by means of background research as

well as the Divide and Conquer strategy which helped us to combine pieces of information to

identify our subtopics.

The members of the group collectively chose the two best data sources that we had gathered.

For our print we selected a newspaper article entitled “Skin Colour Discrimination in Jamaica

During the Era of Decolonisation”. Our audio was a song entitled “Serve and Protect” by

Queen Ifrica and for visual media. As a group we analyzed and discussed these two features

which led us to use the following questions:

1) How does police presence increase crime in a community?

2) Do criminals receive worst treatment because of their skin colour?

In our investigation the group members discovered how one person’s skin colour led to his

demise. According to Dr Dayton Campbell, the MP for North West St Ann, ‘shadism’ was at

play here because a ‘bwoy from uptown, wid dem brown self and pretty hair’ would never

have been arrested for the same crime (Liverpool University Press Blog, 2019). For our

audio segment, the song highlighted police brutality instead of their responsibility to serve

and protect in order to reduce crime and violence in communities.

These two factors selected by our group are quite appropriate because it reveals how crime

and violence is prevalent in our society, has a negative impact on our youth in general and

very difficult to place under control.
