TEST 1
INSTRUCTIONS: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN THIS PAPER Duration: 1 hour :30 mins

1. Describe in details the three types of VFDs that are used to control the speed of three-phase
induction motors and state clearly the advantages and disadvantages of each. [15 Marks]

2. Draw and explain the speed torque characteristics of a 3-phase induction motor when its speed is
controlled by
i. Changing the rotor circuit resistance and [5 Marks]
ii. controlling the supply voltage [5 Marks]

3. What is the basic principle of speed control of 3-phase induction motor by pole changing method?
Explain how two different torque-speed characteristics can obtained in this method.

4. A pole, 50Hz, 3-phase induction motor has rotor resistance of 0.2Ω per phase and rotor standstill
reactance of 1Ω per phase. On full load, it is running with a slip of 4%. Calculate the extra
resistance required in the rotor circuit per phase to reduce the speed to 1260 rpm, on the same
load condition. [5 Marks]

5. A three-phase, 400V, 1000rpm wound rotor (slip-ring) induction motor is operating with a slip of
0.02 and taking a stator current of 60A. If the speed of the motor is reduced to 500rpm at constant
torque using stator voltage control technique, calculate the new value of the stator current.

6. A 6-pole induction motor and 4-pole induction motor are connected in cummulative cascade to a
50Hz supply. The frequency in the secondary circuit of the 4-pole motor is observed to be 1.0Hz.
Determine:
i. slip in each machine, and [5 Marks]
ii. combined speed of the set. [5 Marks]
