Okay, please keep your paper and let’s find out (the students are keeping their paper)
later, if you are correct.

Motivation
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
Class are you familiar with 4 pics and 1 Yes ma’am
word game?
Good! In this game I’ll show you a picture, you have to Yes ma’am
guess it with the help of jumbled word just below the
picture. Did you get it?

The class will be divided into three. Please count off 1-3. (the students are starting to count and form
their group)
Choose a leader to represent your group, please write the
names of your group members.
Do you all have a group? Yes ma’am
That’s good!
May I know who the representative for each group is? (Kim raise her hand as group 1 leader,
Group1? Group 2? And for group 3? Mica raise her hand as group 2 leader and
Desiree for group 3)
The first group who will get the correct answer will be (students are getting excited)
given a point.

Okay, are you all ready? Can we start? Yes ma’am

Okay, so let’s start.
(Teacher is flashing the picture)

(students are starting to share ideas)

C R K S O
Okay, what is this class? (Desiree the group 3 leader is raising her
hand)
Yes group 3? Rocks!

Correct! What can you say about the word rocks? Rock is a solid mineral substance on the
surface or under the soil.
Alright! Let us give them five claps! (the students are clapping their hands)

IV. Lesson Proper

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
A rock is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of one or
more minerals. The aggregate minerals forming rocks
are held together by chemical bonds. Grains cam be
different in color, texture and sizes. Geologists then
group rocks into three categories based on how the
rocks form.
What is the scientific study of rocks? Petrology
(Beka answered)
Very good! There are three types of rocks, what are (Ana is raising her hand)
those?
Yes Ana? Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic
Very good! Igneous rocks are formed from hardening (the students are preparing their notebook
and crystallization of magma or molten material that and pen to take some notes.)
originates deep within the earth.

There are two types of igneous rocks, what are those? (Daniel is raising his hand)
Yes Daniel? The two types of igneous rock are
extrusive/volcanic rock and
intrusive/plutonic.
Alright! Extrusive/volcanic rock forms when magma .
makes its way to earth’s surface as lava and then cools. Fine-grained for extrusive and coarse
The crystals are very small (fine-grained) since the grained for intrusive.
cooling process is fast. While intrusive/plutonic cools
slowly beneath the earth’s surface and are created by
magma. The intrusive igneous rocks have very large
crystals (coarse grained). What words best describes
the two types of igneous rocks?
Very good! Igneous rocks are classified based on (the students are reading the definition of
its composition and texture. Composition is divided into terms flashing on the screen)
four : felsic, mafic, intermediate, ultramafic. And texture
is divided into five: aphanistic, phanetiric, porphyritic,
glassy, and pyroclastic.
(the teacher is flashing the definition of terms on the
screen)

Here are the examples of igneous rocks, I want you to

categorize and classify them based on their composition
and texture by just looking at the pictures. Let’s answer.
(the teacher is flashing the pictures of igneous rocks on
the screen)

(the students are starting to answer in

chorus)

Basalt –extrusive- aphanistic

Pumice –extrusive- pyroclastic
Obsidian Granite

Obsidian- extrusive- glassy

Granite- intrusive-phaneritic

Pegmatite Peridotite

Pegmatite- intrusive- phaneritic

Peridotite- intrusive- phaneritic

Rhyolite Tuff

Rhyolite- extrusive- aphanistic

Tuff- extrusive- pyroclastic

Andesite- extrusive- aphanistic to porphyritic

Andesite Gabbro Gabbro- intrusive- phanetiric
Diorite Scoria

Diorite- intrusive- phaneritic

Scoria- extrusive- aphanistic

Excellent! It is good that everybody is participating.

Let’s go to next type of rock, the metamorphic rocks. Regional and contact
Metamorphic rocks form from pre-existing rocks: either (the students are answering in chorus)
metamorphic, igneous, sedimentary or other
metamorphic rocks that have been altered by agents of
metamorphism.
Metamorphism is the transformation of one rock type to
another. There are two types of metamorphism regional
and contact. What are the two types of metamorphism?
Metamorphic rocks are classified based on its texture-
foliated rocks and non-foliated rocks.

Here are some examples tell me if it’s foliated or non- (the students are answering in chorus)
foliated. You just have to guess.
Gneiss-foliated
Gneiss Marble Marble-non foliated

Schist Slate Schist-foliated

Slate-foliated

Amphibolite-non foliated
Amphibolite Eclogite Eclogite-foliated

Quartzite Phyllite Quartzite-non foliated

Phyllite-foliated

Good job everyone! I hope you have familiarize the

examples of each type of rock.
So now let’s go to the third type of rocks, the
sedimentary rocks.
Sedimentary rocks provide information about surface
conditions that existed in the earth’s past.
There are three types of sedimentary rocks the clastic,
chemical and organic.
Examples of clastic are:
Conglomerate Breccia

Sandstone Shale

For chemical is

Halite

And for organic is

Coal

Is everything clear? Any questions or clarifications? Yes ma’ am, no questions.

ACTIVITY
Okay, please get 1/2 sheet of paper let’s have an activity
with the same group. This activity is called Name It.
Identify and classify the types of rocks as to igneous,
sedimentary and metamorphic rock.
Are you ready? Yes we are ready!
(the teacher is flashing the examples of rocks )
(the students are starting to answer)
Let’s check your work. Who got the perfect score? (All groups are raising their hands)
Wow! Good job everyone. (the students are ecstatic while clapping)
ANALYSIS

Okay class, are you familiar with Venn diagram?

Good! Fill in the Venn Diagram to determine the
similarities and differences of the three types of rocks.
Do this in 10 minutes with the same group.
Yes ma’am
(the groups are starting to share ideas with
their members)

Are you all done? Pass your papers. Yes ma’am

ABSTRACTION Yes ma’am

Are you familiar with schematic diagram? (the groups are starting to share ideas with
Good! So I have here a schematic diagram of rock cycle their members)
with no label. Again, do this with the same group.
Label the diagram with appropriate words from the word
bank.

Slow uplift to the surface Igneous rock

Sedimentation Crystallization of magma

Compaction and Cementattion Lava

Melting Burial, high temperatures and pressures

Sedimentary rock Metamorphic rock

Transport and Deposition Magma

Are you done? Pass your papers. Yes ma’am

APPLICATION
Rocks are all around us. It is used for building materials, (the students are starting to do the task
cars, roads, and appliances. As a senior high school given to them)
student, how can you promote the sustainable
development in utilizing these resources? Give some
suggestions do this with your group.

Then pass your papers when you’re done.
