TYPES OF VOLCANOES ACCORDING
TO SHAPE

• What have you observe about their crater or caldera?

Cinder cones get their name from the material that forms them, cinders.
Cinder cones are the simplest volcanic formation. They form from
explosions of red, hot magma cinders and ash. These cinders and ash
settle around the main vent and build a steep sided cone. Very little lava
is erupted from a cinder cone.
Stratovolcanoes or composite cones are formed from a combination of
eruptions. First the volcano will have an explosive eruption that ejects
huge amounts of steam, gas and ash. This will be followed by the
ejection of lava. A large stratovolcano will be built with many layers of
ash and lava.
Shield cones were named by Icelandic people because the cone's shape
reminded them of a warriors shield laid down. Shield cones form from
hot, runny lava that is erupted from the the volcano through its
summit and the many side vents and fissures throughout the
volcano's flanks (Sides). Shield cones are low, very broad, and
gently sloping volcanoes.
• What do you think made this?
• Why do volcanoes differ in shapes?
LET’S DEMONSTRATE!!!
QUESTIONS:
• How volcanologists classify the volcanic eruptions?
• Explain the relationship between volcanic emission and the
shape of its slope.
• What determines the nature of eruption?
Base from the song:

• 1. What causes volcanic eruption?

• 2. What does volcano do during volcanic
eruption?
GROUP ACTIVITY
• Perform the activity “Fluids
Viscosity Experiment”
• 1.Explain viscosity in your own
words.
• 2.Which liquid is the most viscous?
How do you know?
• 3. Compare how these liquids flow
with how you think lava flows.
• 4. Why do some types of lava travel
faster than other?
After the experiment, students will be divided into two groups. One
group will represent their ideas about volcanic eruptions or eruptive
styles through a dance and the other group will represent their ideas
about volcanic landforms volcano through a poem.
EXTEND
• 1. How will you describe the slope of the Pinatubo volcano?
• 2. What type of magma do you think the Mayon Volcano ejects?
GENERALIZATION

1. Compare the appearances of the cones.

2. Which volcano has the greatest slope? Which
has the least slope?
3. Explain how the type of material extruded from
a volcano affects the shape of its cone.
4. In what way does the formation of a volcanic
cone model differ from a real volcano?
EVALUATION
Answer the following questions:
1.What factors affect the explosiveness of a volcanic eruption?
2. Why is the amount of gas in magma important in relation to volcanic
eruptions?
3. Enumerate the different eruptive styles.
4. Define the following and state what kind of magma characteristically
erupts from each: (a) shield volcano, (b) stratovolcano, (c) cinder cone,
(d) lava dome.
