At the end of the lesson, 80% of the students are expected to:
a. describe a Volcano;
b. identify the types of Volcano according to shape and activity;
c. recognize the importance of a Volcano.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Volcano

Motivation

Have you seen a fountain?

What are the some fountain that you have
seen?
Will you name one? Chocolate fountain, Water fountain and
Fireworks fountain.

Can you describe it? It is something that sent up to the air and falls
back.

It is something that is forced up to the air and

falls back.
Can you think of a landform that you can
compare to a fountain?
A fountain is compared to a volcano.
Very good!

B. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON

Now, you are about to watch a video clip
about Volcanoes, all you need to do is to
watch and listen carefully. Take note those
important details and please observe silence.
Is that clear?
Yes Ma’am!

Based on the video, what is a Volcano?

Yes Liza? Volcano is a mountain with a hole in the top
or side that sometimes send out rocks, ash and
lava.
Excellent!

Volcano is usually a cone shaped mountain or

hill that opens downward to a pool of molten
rock below the surface of the Earth.
Understood? Yes Ma’am!

How do volcanoes form?

(The students will share their ideas.)
All of you are correct.

This is how volcanoes formed:

1. Pressure builds up inside the Earth.

2. When this pressure is released, eg as a
result of plate movement, magma explodes to
the surface causing a volcanic eruption.
3. The lava from the eruption cools to form
new crust.
4. Over time, after several eruptions, the rock
builds up and a volcano forms.

Did you understand?

Yes Ma’am.
What are the three types of Volcanoes
according to Shape?
Yes Dayce? The different types of Volcano according to
shape are Shield Volcano, Composite Volcano
and Cinder cone Volcano.
Bravo!

Shield Volcano is a type of volcano built

entirely or mostly from fluid lava vents.
Composite Volcano is a conical volcano

consisting of layers of solid lava flows mixed

with layers of other rocks.
Cinder cone Volcano doesn’t have any
horizontal layers and is instead a steep conical
hill of tephra that accumulates around and Yes Ma’am.
downwind from the vent.

Is that clear?

What are the different types of Volcano

according to activity? The different types of Volcano according to
activity are Active Volcano, Dormant
Volcano, Extinct Volcano and Erupting
Volcano.
Excellent!

Active Volcanoes are the type of volcanoes

that in general have been active for a certain
period of time.
Dormant Volcanoes are assumed to be
inactive for more than thousands of years
however there have been several exceptions to
this rule.
Extinct Volcano are assumed unlikely to erupt
as the supply of magma from the volcano is
depleted.
Erupting Volcano are terrible explosions that
throw out huge amounts of rock and volcanic
ash and kill many people.

Understood?
Yes Ma’am!

V. APPLICATION

Today, I have prepared a group activity.

I will group you into three. We will have a
game called “VolcaKNOWS”.
Each group will be given a board. I will read a
different question about Volcano and you will
be given 10 second to answer and if I say
“Answer’s Up”each group must raise their
answer.
The group that will gain more points will be
the winner. Understood?

Yes Ma’am.

(The students will do the activity.)

VI. EVALUATION

1.What is a Volcano?
2.What are the 3 types of Volcano according to Shape?
3.What are the 4 types of Volcano according to Activity?

VII. ASSIGNMENT
1. What is a fault?
2. What are the types of fault?
3. What is a trench?
