Prepare and Interpret Technical Drawing (TD)
Introduction
Fig. 1 Technical Drawing is an important aspect of ICT for most processes are represented graphically using
diagrams. (Source: https://www.rgbstock.com/photo/mgyoNYC/tech+4)
This lesson covers the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to prepare and interpret
technical drawings such as diagrams, engineering drawings, and flowcharts. As learners, you
are also expected to identify the different symbols used in various types of technical drawings.
Using this knowledge, you will be able to interpret diagrams, engineering drawings, and
especially flowcharts that represent various processes in ICT.

Learning Targets
In this lesson, you should be able to:
● identify the different kinds of technical
drawings;
● identify basic symbols used in technical
drawings;
● select the appropriate technical drawing in
accordance with the job requirements;
● identify the basic symbols in flowcharting;
● interpret the symbols used in flowcharting;
and
● create a flowchart that depicts a simple
scenario.

Learn about It!
As a computer technician, you will encounter many diagrams and technical drawings. These
drawings will serve as a guide for you to understand the device you are working on or the
steps you have to follow in order to make your work successful. This will help make your work
faster and safer.
Different Types of Technical Drawings used in ICT
There are many types of technical drawings like engineering drawings, structural drawings,
and layout drawings; but in this lesson, you will be introduced to the most commonly used
drawings in ICT. They are the following:
● Block Diagram - a representation of a system showing the parts or processes as blocks
connected by lines that shows the relationship among them.
Fig. 2 An example of a block diagram showing the components of a computer system.

● Schematic diagram - a drawing that shows the components of a system using standard
symbols. Most common schematic diagrams represent electrical and electronic circuits.
Fig. 2 An example of a schematic diagram showing the components of an electronic circuit.
● Pictorial Diagram - a drawing that shows the parts of a system using simple images
instead of symbols.
Fig. 3 An example of a pictorial diagram showing the components of an electronic circuit.

● Flowchart - a drawing that shows the steps in a process using standard symbols.
Flowcharts are commonly used by programmers to show the steps in solving a
problem.

Basic Symbols Used in Technical Drawings
Technical drawing, also known as drafting, is a discipline that creates plans that visually or
graphically represent how something works or is built. There are standard types of lines used
in drafting. These different line types present different ideas so it is important to use the right
kind of line always.

Look for sample house floor plans, then analyze the lines and symbols used. Are these
symbols the same in most or all of them?
Common Electronic Schematic Symbols
A schematic diagram uses symbols that are internationally accepted. Here are some
schematic symbols used in electrical and electronic circuits.
Look for the instruction manual of common household appliances. Is there a schematic
diagram included in the manual? Why do you think this is important to include in the manual?

Symbols Used in Flowcharting
Flowcharts show the flow of process in a procedure, commonly a computer program. They
guide programmers in creating computer applications and understanding how they work.
They serve as the blueprint for every program there is. The following are the most common
symbols in flowcharting:
Symbol Shape/ Function
(Oval)
Terminator
(Parallelogram)
Input / Output
(Rectangle)
Process
(Diamond)
Decision
(Hexagon)

As a computer programmer, you were tasked by your System Development Supervisor to
create the flowchart for a client that needs a simple program that will compute the final
average of a student for the four quarters or grading period. The flowchart must follow
industry standard.
Your flowchart will be graded using the following criteria:

Big Idea
Drawings are found in every corner. But when it comes to technical drawing, every symbol has
a meaning and function. The knowledge of these symbols and the skills to interpret them will
help us make our work easier and safer.
No matter where we go, in school, at work, or even on the street, knowing what these symbols
mean will help us have a safer and better life.
Wrap Up
● Technical drawings follow standard symbols that are the same anywhere in the world.
● There are different types of technical drawings but the most commonly used in ICT are
block diagrams, schematic diagrams, and flowcharts.
● The kind of technical drawing created and used varies with the kind of task or
components needed to be graphically represented.
