ASSIGNMENT - 5

BASIC PROBABILITY BAYS THEOREMS

1
1- You are given that A and B are events such that, P ( A ∖ B )=
2 ,
3 4
P ( B )=
5
, P ( A ∪ B)=
5

Find: P ( A ∩ B ), P( A) , P (B ∖ A c) , P¿ , P ( Ac ∪ B) .

2- 100 students appeared for two examinations. 60 passed the

first, 50 passed the second and 30 passed both. Find the
probability that a student selected at random has failed in both
examinations.

3-A class consists of 6 girls and 10 boys. If a committee of 3 is

chosen at random from the class, find the probability that

(i) 3 boys are selected (ii) at least one boy is

selected

4- The three events E1, E2 and E3 are defined in the same sample
space. The events E1and E3 are mutually exclusive. The events
E1 and E2 are independent.

2 1 1
Given that P ( E1 )= 5 , P ( E3 ) = 3 and P ( E 1 ∩ E 2 )=
8 , find

(a) P ( E1 ∪ E 3 ) , (b) P ( E 2 ).

5- A box contains 8 red, 3 white and 9 blue balls. |If 3 balls are
drawn at random without replacement, determine the
probability that

(i) all 3 are red. (ii) 2 are red and 1 is blue.

(iii)one of each color is drawn.

6- A box contains 2 red and 3 blue marbles. Find the probability

that if two marbles are drawn at random (without
replacement), (i) both are blue, (ii) both are red, (c) one is red
and one is blue

(Bayes' Theorem).

7- A corporation has three methods of training employees.

Because of time, space, and location, it sends 20% of its
employees to location A, 35% to location B, and 45% to location
C. Location A has an 80% success rate. That is, 80% of the
employees who complete the course will pass the licensing
exam. Location B has a 75% success rate, and location C has a
60% success rate.

(i) Sketch a tree diagram.

(i) If a person has passed the exam, find the probability that the
person went to location B.

(ii) If a person failed the exam, find the probability that the
person went to location C.

8- Companies B1 , B2 , B3 produce 30% , 45% and 25% of the cars
respectively. It is known that

2% , 3% and 2% of the cars produced from B 1 , B2 and B3 are

defective.

a) Produce a tree diagram of a randomly selected car.

b) What is the probability that a car purchased is defective?

c) If a car purchased is found to be defective, what is the

probability that this car is produced by company B3.
