1. Gases have three characteristic properties: (1) they are easy to compress, (2)
they expand to fill their containers, and (3) they occupy far more space than
the liquids or solids from which they form. An internal combustion engine
provides a good example of the ease with which gases can be compressed.

2. Boyle's law states that the volume of a given mass of gas varies inversely with
the pressure when the temperature is kept constant. An inverse relationship is
described in this way. As one variable increases in value, the other variable
decreases.

Boyle's Law P1V1 = P2V2 This Law basically states that a change in the volume of
a gas will have an effect on its pressure.

3. The mathematical expression of Boyle's law is a constant pressure and


constant volume, which can be expressed as: P V = k, where P is pressure, V is
volume and k is a constant. This means that for a constant pressure, a constant
volume must be maintained.
