Reasonable Adjustment
Adapted Reasonable Adjustment in teaching, learning and assessment for learners with a disability -
November 2010 - Prepared by - Queensland VET Development Centre
Reasonable adjustment in VET is the term applied to modifying the learning environment or making
changes to the training delivered to assist a learner with a disability. A reasonable adjustment can be
as simple as changing classrooms to be closer to amenities or installing a particular type of software
on a computer for a person with vision impairment.
Why make a reasonable adjustment?
We make reasonable adjustments in VET to make sure that learners with a disability have:
The same learning opportunities as learners without a disability, and
The same opportunity to perform and complete assessments as those without a disability.
Reasonable adjustment applied to participation in teaching, learning and assessment activities can
include:
Customising resources and assessment activities within the training package or accredited
course
Modifying the presentation medium
Learner support
Use of assistive/adaptive technologies
Making information accessible both before enrolment and during the course
Monitoring the adjustments to ensure learners needs continue to be met
Assistive/Adaptive Technologies
Assistive/Adaptive technology means ‘software or hardware that has been specifically designed to
assist people with disabilities in carrying out daily activities’ (World Wide Web Consortium - W3C). It
includes screen readers, magnifiers, voice recognition software, alternative keyboards, devices for
grasping, visual alert systems, digital note-takers.

Question 2
Question 3
Communication Process Technique How each technique can be demonstrated in the workplace
a. Negotiation, e.g. i. Verbal Communication Verbal communication seems like the most obvious of the different types
business deals of communication. It utilizes the spoken word, either face-to-face or
remotely. Verbal communication is essential to most interactions, but
there are other nonverbal cues that help provide additional context to the
words themselves. Pairing nonverbal communication with the spoken
word provides a more nuanced message.
ii. Non- verbal Nonverbal communication provides some insight into a speaker’s word
communication choice. Sarcasm, complacency, deception or genuineness occur within
nonverbal communication. These things are often communicated through
facial expressions, hand gestures, posture and even appearance, all of
which can convey something about the speaker. For instance, a
disheveled speaker with wrinkled clothes and poor posture would
communicate a lack of confidence or expertise. A speaker with a nice suit,
who stood up straight and spoke clearly, may appear more serious or

knowledgeable.
iii. Visual Communication Visual types of communication include signs, maps or drawings as well as
color or graphic design. These typically reinforce verbal communication,
and they help to make a point. Visual aids can help a speaker remember
important topics, give the audience something to look at, and generally
help convey the message being presented.
ii. Facilitative meditation In between these two ends of the mediation style spectrum are
facilitative mediators. This is the style of mediation that may be most
familiar to people. Facilitative mediators are appreciated for the ways
they adapt based on the parties’ dynamic needs. They may use
techniques from both evaluative and transformative appoaches. Using a
facilitative style, a mediator asks questions, normalizes perspectives,
and validates both parties’ points of view.
iii. Evaluative meditation A mediator who uses an evaluative approach is likely to be appreciated
for his/her no-nonsense style. Evaluative mediators work quickly and
efficiently to get to the point, and write up a solution. They are more
likely to weigh in on options and make recommendations based on their
experience.
c. Conflict Resolution i. Meditation The goal of mediation is for a neutral third party to help disputants come
to a consensus on their own.
ii. Arbitration In arbitration, a neutral third party serves as a judge who is responsible
for resolving the dispute.
iii. Ligitation The most familiar type of dispute resolution, civil litigation typically
involves a defendant facing off against a plaintiff before either a judge or
a judge and jury.
d. Incident de escalation i. Move to a private area If it seems safe to do so, it may be helpful to move the patient away
from public spaces and into a private area to talk.
ii. Be empathetic and non- “Focus on understanding the person’s feelings. Whether or not you
judgemental think those feelings are justified, they’re real to the other person.”
iii. Respect personal space “If possible, stand 1.5 to three feet away from the person . . . Allowing
personal space tends to decrease a person’s anxiety and can help
prevent acting-out behavior. Do not block exits.”
