Ed Sheeran.

In this video we start off with a female crying over another female then the story of a prostitute of how she sleeps on a bench, makes money from selling the big issue and prostitution to pay for drugs, that lead into her taking an overdose and dying. It then goes back to the beginning to show her crying over herself, which is a flash forward to show the audience what happens to her.

The girl crying over her dead self.

Spends money on drugs. Overdose.

Trying to earn money. Big Issue and prostitution.

In this music video Todorovs theory is expressed in the fact that we see the girl dead. Also we observe the girl walking round London, which sets the scene of where the girl lives, and her surroundings plus this expresses her normality in life, which is the equilibrium. This then leads to her taking drugs from selling herself and selling the big issue, to me this is the disruption, because it causes the death, which is now her normality because of the causes. For Levi Strauss theory we looked at the lyrics and came up with sells love to another man which to us means good life vs bad life, at the point that she has a life, but that fact she has to sell herself to earn money is the downside. We also looked at the lyrics white lips, pale face, breathing in the snowflakes, to us this links to fragile vs strong,, because of how snowflakes portray the drugs, but at the fact she has white lips and pale face, from an overdose and looking incredibly fragile. We then looked at the strong side and this goes against her being fragile, of maybe being able to say no to the drugs. Barthes theory of puzzles and riddles was quite hard to find but we did find that Ed Sheeran coming into the music video acting like a normal person buying the magazine, he does seem quite interested in the girl because of him sitting next to her. This is a question that the audience could ask because it makes you think what he sees in her. Not all the theories are evidenced, just three, which I think is enough for a narrative to explain the text.

I think the text has chosen to contrast its narrative in this way because the lyrics connect to the video and it has underlying messages come through. I also think the artist has made this song and video to show how things can happen in real life but unfortunately go unnoticed. I also think it has been used this way to show how bad prostitution and taking drugs can be and what it can lead to. In addition to this using the black and white to show how dark and miserable the girls life is. We have both learnt to create a music video, you dont have to spend a lot or have extreme technology to create a simple video that links to the song. Also the fact you dont have to use all the theories to create a narrative piece of text and for it to make sense. Finally we will consider all narrative theories ensuring that my text will be targeted to the correct audience. Joanna Embley. Natalie Goode.
