Exercise 2: Apply text effects and clear text formatting


1. Open L4_T2_act_formatting_example.docx.
2. Select all the text in the document by pressing Ctrl+A.
3. With the entire document selected, on the Home tab, in the Font group, select the Clear All
Formatting command. Demonstrate to the students that all the content is now set to the default
settings.
4. Open the Font dialog box by selecting the arrow in the Font group on the Home tab. Close it, and
then press Ctrl+D. Emphasize that both actions produced the same result.
5. In the Font dialog box, change the following:
 Font: Verdana
 Size: 12 pt.
 Font color: Black, Text 1
 Select Set As Default, and then in the pop-up box, select This document only? and select OK.
6. Demonstrate that the document default font settings have been applied.
7. Select the Concord Grapes title text by placing your cursor in the margin before the text.
Emphasize to the students how the cursor changes to an arrow when it's in the margin area,
making it easy to select this entire line.
8. On the Home tab, in the Font group, select the Text Effects and Typography command. Hover
over several of the prebuilt options and emphasize how you can use the preview feature to
compare these settings before making a selection.
9. Select the following options:
 Fill: Black, Text color 1
 Outline: White, Background color 1
 Hard Shadow: Blue, Accent color 5
10. With this text effect applied and the text still selected, increase the font size of this title using the
Increase Font Size command in the Font group on the Home tab. Demonstrate the same effect
by pressing Ctrl+Shift+>. Increase the font size to 20 pt.
11. Select the next heading A cultivar of the genus Vitis labrusca.
12. On the Home tab, in the Font group, select the Text Effects and Typography command, and
then select the Fill: Blue, Accent color 1; Shadow option, in the first row.
13. Increase the font size to 18 pt.
14. Select the next heading Growing Grapes in your yard.
15. Select the Text Effects and Typography command.

16. Create your own text effect on this setting by selecting the following options in the Text Effects
and Typography gallery:
 Outline color: Blue-Gray, Text 2
 Shadow: Offset: Left
 Reflection: Tight Reflection: 4-point offset
 Glow: 11 point; Blue, Accent color 1
17. Increase the font size to 16 pt.
18. Announce that you’ll now use the Format Painter to copy formatting from one part of the text to
another.
19. Select the words A cultivar in the second heading, and then, on the Home tab, in the Clipboard
group, select Format Painter. Demonstrate that the cursor has changed to a paintbrush icon and
is ready to paste this format to other text.
20. Select the text Support the vines with the paintbrush cursor. Press Esc to turn off Format Painter.
21. Select the words Growing Grapes in your yard, and then, on the Home tab, in the Clipboard
group, select Format Painter.
22. Select the text Plant growth with the paintbrush cursor.
23. Save this file as L4_T2_act_formatting_example_final.docx.
