Odyssey puzzle solutions

Chapter 1

You will start at the pier after alighting from the boat.

After picking the journal fragment at the pier gate, and reading it, you are required to identify
which direction is “North” by moving the slider to point to the North Star.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The two stars at the head of the Big Dipper point to the North Star. So the correct position of the
slider is as shown below.

Walking inland, you will come to the hut where you can add the pickaxe to your inventory.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Use the pickaxe to break the crate. Inside will be a puzzle piece.

Pick it up and go to the wooden barrier, and break it with the pickaxe.

© The Young Socratics 2017

You will find two more crates with puzzle pieces inside as you explore around. Break the crates
and gather the pieces inside.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Complete the jigsaw puzzle inside the panel. This will allow electricity to pass through from one
side to the other, through an electrical wire that is stuck on two of the puzzle pieces. Read the
fragment that you found inside the panel.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The electrical wire runs along the flat horizon in the sunset picture.

The electricity now powers the journal box which can be opened by clicking on the blue button.

Pick up the figurine inside.

© The Young Socratics 2017

This male figure should be plugged into a location on the globe which corresponds to the
antipode for the female figure already found on the globe.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The globe is now unlocked. Pull the handle to open it. Inside it will be a journal fragment and a
key. Pick both of them.

Hike up the hill all the way to the top.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Plug the key into the generator to start it.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Once it starts, you can operate the puzzle on the door.

This is a representation of Aristotle’s universe with the 5 elements. You need to order them
correctly, with earth in the center, water around it, followed by air, fire and ether on the outside.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Pressing on the white button will open the entrance to the army observatory.

Pick up the fragment and read it. Climb up the ladder. You will enter a dark room with a table,
having two models of the moon on it.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Bring the sun (represented by the light bulb) to a position where the spherical moon is partly
illuminated and the flat disk-shaped moon has just been fully illuminated.

You can now open the drawer. Inside it is a clue to the next puzzle that you will encounter on
the floor above.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Open the journal fragment box to bring down a ladder. Read the fragment.

Go up and place the sun in front of the constellation Gemini (drawn in the hint above).

© The Young Socratics 2017

The combination lock on the wall shows four of the moon phases.

You need to match the phases with the constellations the moon would be in, when showing
those phases.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Doing so will open a trapdoor with a drop-down ladder. Read the fragment you find and go up to
the top floor.

When the sun, moon and Earth are arranged in a line to create a lunar eclipse, the exit door
opens outside.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Walk outside, and manipulate the model on the table outside to create a stripe shadow on the
moon during a lunar eclipse, using a flat disk-shaped Earth.

© The Young Socratics 2017

This configuration allows you to open the drawer with a key inside.

Use the key to unlock the zipline.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Click on the zipline to ride down it to the next (second) island.

Chapter 2

Walk down the ladder and enter the hut on the right.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Open the journal fragment box and read the fragment. Manipulate the geocentric celestial
sphere model to make the sun shine directly on the Tropic of Capricorn, on the winter solstice.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Do the same with the adjacent heliocentric model. The output light on the wall behind should
turn green.

Pick up and read the next fragment from the box, and solve the ‘Galileo’ puzzle. Press the right
square in the first row, the left square in the second row, the middle square in the third row, and
the right square in the bottom row. These correspond to Galileo’s observations that helped him
argue against Ptolemy’s model.

© The Young Socratics 2017

You can now open the door of the other hut.

Go inside and pick up the journal fragment from the box to the left. Read it. Turn on the
geocentric model for explaining the retrograde motion of Mars, by flicking the yellow switch.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Moving the green slider to the right will make Mars (represented by the orange ball) to move in a
big circular orbit (deferent) around the Earth.

Moving the red slider to the right will add epicycles to the previous motion.

© The Young Socratics 2017

You need to adjust the relative positions of the green and red sliders to make Mars loop
backwards relative to the Earth. To achieve that, make the epicycle motion speed fast (the red
slider should be farther to the right) and the deferent motion speed slow (the green slider should
be to the left) to get loops. Freezing the apparatus at a moment when Mars is going backwards
along one of the loops will turn the output light on.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The adjacent table now has power. It represents the heliocentric model for explaining the
retrograde motion of Mars.

Turn on the motion of Earth and Mars by flicking the yellow switch. Notice that as the Earth
approaches close to Mars, the laser light from the Earth (through Mars) to the constellation
table, which is generally moving clockwise, briefly changes its direction to move anti-clockwise.
Freeze the apparatus when it is moving anti-clockwise to power the output light on.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Follow the output wire out of the hut and notice that it goes down a cliff.

Follow the stone steps to go down to the bottom of the cliff where there is a lagoon.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The wire ends at a sump pump. Turn on the power, and it will drain the lagoon.

© The Young Socratics 2017

At the bottom of the empty lagoon is a door.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Open it and go inside. At the end of the passage will be a cart on tracks with a journal fragment
hanging off it. Read the fragment, and enter the cart.

Press the yellow button to turn on 5 brightly colored lights on the other side of the water. These
lights are at different distances from you.

© The Young Socratics 2017

You need to solve the “parallax puzzle”, by moving the cart along the tracks in the left-right
direction and figuring out how the lights are arranged in increasing order of distance from you.
Once you figure out the order, swap the squares on the device in front to match the correct
order. The yellow light is closest, followed by red, green and blue. The purple light is the
farthest.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Pulling the handle on the right will bring down a bridge.

Exit the cart and follow the bridge over the water. On the other side will be a table with a model
of Venus and the sun. You are supposed to be the Earth. Venus is initially placed on the
geocentric track, so when it moves (upon rotating the crank), it follows an arc around you (the
Earth).

© The Young Socratics 2017

Move Venus to the heliocentric track by bringing it to the common junction and toggling the
handle.

Move Venus around the heliocentric track until it is behind the sun and shows a full phase.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Now go to the back of the model where there is a switch. Pulling it will bring down a ladder.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Climb up the ladder. You will be at the base of the radio tower.

Follow the ladder up the tower. Along the way will be a platform with a crate.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Break the crate and add the crank inside to your inventory.

Climb up to the very top of the radio tower. Look through the telescope placed at the top and
note the word it points to on the third island (BIRD), the biggest of the Wretched Minor islands.
You will need it later when you get there.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Retrace your steps back to the bridge.

Use the crank to rotate the bridge.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Walk back to the first island and back up to the top of the army observatory near the zipline. Use
the crank on the bridge there to rotate it.

Change the eclipse model inside from lunar to solar eclipse.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The other exit from the top should now be open, leading to the second zipline.

Click on it to ride it to the third island.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Chapter 3

Walk down the path from the zipline landing area to the bottom of the hill until you come to the
first watchtower.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Pick up the journal fragment from near the base of the watchtower and read it. Climb up the
watchtower to the puzzle on the top.

For each line on the distance-time graph, which has a unique color, identify its slope and match
it with the correct (time, distance) values lying on the line. For example, the slope of the red line
is 60/6 = 10 and the point (3, 30) lies on the red line.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Climb down the watchtower and keep following the output wire. Along the way, you will come to
a crate. Break it with the pickaxe and collect the parchment inside.

This should now be in your inventory.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Keep following the wire to the top of a second watchtower.

For each speed-time graph, shown in a different color, identify the (time, distance) pair in the left
panel for that same speed, and also match it with the distance-time graph on the right panel.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Follow the output wire, yellow in color, without getting distracted by the other wires.

Along the way, you will find a second crate with a parchment inside.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Add it to your inventory and keep following the yellow wire. It passes through a journal fragment
box, which you should open and read the fragment inside.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Follow the yellow wire to the top of a third watchtower.

If all the 5 objects shown are dropped from a height of 20 meters, what will be the relative times
of fall? Arrange the 5 objects in the correct order: time taken by steel ball < time taken by stone
< time taken by twig < time taken by vertical feather < time taken by horizontal feather. The steel

ball will land first, by a whisker. The stone will land almost at the same time, only slightly later.
The horizontal feather will take the most time to land.

Follow the orange output wire. Retrieve a third parchment from inside a crate along the way.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The red wire leads to a hut where the next journal fragment is kept. Read it and play with the
experiment models in the hut to understand the concepts.

Follow the purple output wire, adding a 4th parchment from inside a crate along the way.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The purple wire ends at a puzzle on the top of a fourth watchtower. In each row, the left panel
shows the initial starting position of a pendulum bob. You need to pick the correct final position
(where the bob briefly stops after swinging to the other side) from the three choices on the right.
The bob will rise to the same height on the other side.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Follow the pink output wire, adding a 5th parchment from inside a crate along the way.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The purple wire leads to another hut with the next journal fragment in it. Read it to understand
the pendulum experiment placed next to it.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Follow the red output wire. It may seem to disappear up a cliff, but walk a few steps forward and
you will see it come back and go up a 5th watchtower.

© The Young Socratics 2017

On the top of the watchtower is a puzzle asking you to enter how long it would take for each of
the 4 objects shown to fall through a distance of 20 meters in vacuum. It is given that the steel
ball takes 2 seconds to fall.

In vacuum, each object would take exactly the same time (2 seconds) to fall.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Following the green output wire is more tricky as it disappears up the vertical wall of a cliff. But
by going up to the hanging bridge at the top, you can follow the wire, which ends at a third hut.

Inside the hut is the next journal fragment, which you should read to understand the
experiments around it.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Follow the light blue output wire.

At one point, it will appear to disappear inside some bushes.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Follow it through the bushes.

It ends at a cryptex.

This is the location pointed by the telescope on the radio tower.

Enter BIRD into the cryptex to power the safe placed next to it.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Pressing the red button of the safe oscillates a pendulum hidden inside, whose bob you can
see. Sliding the arrow up and down changes the frequency of oscillation (and the time period) of
the pendulum. The topmost position of the arrow corresponds to the lowest frequency of
oscillation (the oscillations are slowest, so the time period is highest). The oscillations are the
fastest (the time period is smallest) when the arrow is at the bottom.

The safe itself has a cryptex whose symbols match the 5 parchments you have collected.

© The Young Socratics 2017

You don’t need to know this, but the 5 symbols are the 5 Platonic solids: cube, tetrahedron,
icosahedron, dodecahedron and octahedron. So you need to arrange the symbols in the correct
order of time periods. Since the time period of a pendulum depends only on the length, you can
ignore everything else in the parchment diagrams. Just order the pendulum bobs (parchment
symbols) based on their lengths.

From top to bottom, the order is icosahedron, tetrahedron, dodecahedron, cube and
octahedron.

You can now open the safe. Read the fragment you find inside, and collect the key hidden
behind it.

Walk back to the rotating bridge (near the last hut with the light blue output wire). Use the crank
to rotate it to connect it back to the second island.

Walking across the bridge, you will come to a well with a generator next to it.

Use the key to turn on the generator.

The generator opens the well shaft when it is powered on.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Climb down into the well by following the metal rungs. At the bottom is a rusted door with a
chalk diagram of three pendulums on it. The time period for one of them is given. You need to
enter the time period of the other two pendulums into the combination lock. Pay special
attention to the notches on the left side marking the lengths of the three pendulums. Only the
lengths matter in determining the time period, so you can ignore the masses.

© The Young Socratics 2017

The pendulum with time period 2 (call it the “given pendulum”) has a length 4. The pendulum
above it has a length of 1, one fourth of the length of the “given pendulum”. Since time period is
proportional to the square root of the length, the time period of the pendulum on the top will be
square-root(¼) or half the time period of the “given pendulum”. So its time period will be 1.

Similarly, the pendulum drawn near the bottom has a length of 16, which is 4 times the length of
the “given pendulum”. So its time period must be square-root(4) or 2 times the time period of the
“given pendulum”. This means its time period must be 4. The units don’t matter here.

Enter 4 and 1 where the L-shaped placeholders for the two pendulums are drawn.

This will unlock the door to the caves. It may take some time to load the cave system scene.

Walk up to the table where the next journal fragment is kept, alongside a coupled pendulum.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Read the fragment and play with the coupled pendulum to see its behavior. Walk a few steps
forward and you will see a fork in the path. You can choose to go in either direction. Let’s
assume you make a right turn. (If you go forward, it turns out that your path will sooner or later
lead to the same area, so we don’t need to describe it separately)

You will come to an area where three massive pendulum bobs are hanging.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Since you should know by now how simple pendulums and coupled pendulums behave, when
you try oscillating the three bobs, you will find that one of them behaves weirdly. It oscillates for
some time, then comes to a halt, and then it starts oscillating again on its own. This isn’t how
simple pendulums behave. But a coupled pendulum bob with the other bob hidden would
behave like this. Where is the hidden bob? Looking up, you will see the rope pass through the
stone wall.

© The Young Socratics 2017

So the other bob must be hidden behind the stone wall. Use the pickaxe to break through the
wall near the visible bob.

Enter the secret area, and walk down till you come to another massive coupled pendulum.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Notice the wooden crate placed on top of the pillar. Your job is to knock it down. But you can
only manipulate one bob of the coupled pendulum. Climb up the wooden plank to get to it.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Keep pushing the bob aggressively for some time, until it oscillates so much that when it
pauses, the other bob would be swinging wildly and knock down the crate. When the crate falls,
it will break, revealing a key inside. Add it to the inventory.

Retrace your steps a bit. Notice the two lanterns on your right? Maybe there is something
interesting there?

© The Young Socratics 2017

Indeed, there is a passage there, near the higher lantern.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Continuing through the passage, you will come to another rotating bridge over molten lava!
Whew!

This bridge also has a rail track on it. It looks like if we could rotate it, it would connect to tracks
on the other end, where there seems to be a stationary engine.

© The Young Socratics 2017

There is also a signal (which is red) and a circular door blocking the tracks.

If you walk up towards the door, it opens, but it quickly shuts as you approach it too close. It
looks like the pressure plate on which you stand opens it, but as soon as you get off, it closes. If

© The Young Socratics 2017

only we could have a train with a few wagons approach it… that would keep it open even as the
train goes inside. And maybe there is a similar pressure plate on the other side which will
ensure the whole train has gone through before the door closes.

To rotate the bridge, you need to pick the (final) journal fragment covering the crank slot.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Do read it. Then use the crank to rotate the bridge. Looks like the signal is green now!

Climb on the train and use the key to power it on.

© The Young Socratics 2017

Flick the yellow handle on the left to start it moving.

Enjoy the brief ride and the ending credits! Congratulations for finishing the game!

The story would continue in a sequel (chapters 4-6), which would take place on Wretched
Major.
