a. Identify at least three facts and speculations from the text
Facts:
1) according to students and others that the new law is detrimental to workers
2) their voices were not heard, causing riots
3) the police also fired tear gas which is the wrong way
Speculations:
My speculation is that the government should listen to the voice of the people directly so that
there will be no riots
b. Why do you think the information is a fact or a speculation? What evidence do you have to
support your evaluation?
the proof is that when the students and workers staged a demonstration, our president, Mr.Joko
Widodo, was not at the palace so that the students and workers felt that their voices were not
being heard about this new law which could harm workers.
c. Practice making some speculations or opinions based on the following fact. Use some useful
expressions to show your speculation or opinion! Clashes between rock-throwing demonstrators
and riot police broke out near Jakarta’s
presidential palace as police tried to disperse the protesters, including workers and high school
and university students. It may be true that there was a clash between demonstrators and riot
police in Jakarta and the police tried to break it up but in my opinion it is better for the police on
duty not to use tear gas and to negotiate with the demonstrators.
d. Practice making some inferences based on the following information!
1. Police fired tear gas at the protesters from several high schools and
universities as they tried to approach the palace compound, turning roads into a smokefilled
battleground. In conclusion the police fired tear gas to break up the demonstration
2. Demonstrators also burned road barriers, several cars, a cinema and
Damaged several government offices. the angry demonstrators also burned cars, roadblocks and
cinemas as well as several government offices.
3. Write your own inferences from the text!
In conclusion, the students held demonstrations because they felt that the new law was very
detrimental to workers, so they wanted the law to be removed, but the government did not hear
their voices, so it provoked their emotions and there were riots everywhere
