1. A 0.8234-g sample of "KHP" required 38.

76 mL of NaOH for titration to the phenolphthalein

endpoint. What is the exact molarity of the NaOH solution?

>> 0.8234 g KHP x (1mol/204.22 g) = 4.03x10-3

4.03x10-3 ÷ 0.03876L = 0.104M NaOH

2. A 25.00-mL aliquot of an unstandardized HCl solution is titrated with the previously standardized
NaOH solution from #1 above. If 32.55 mL of NaOH titrant is required to reach the endpoint, what is
the exact molarity of the HCl solution?

M x V = 0.104 x 0.03255 L = 3.3852x10-3

3.3852x10-3 ÷ 0.025L = 0.135 M

3. What mass (in grams) of "KHP" should be used for the standardization of a NaOH solution that is
approximately 0.14 M NaOH if the volume of NaOH titrant used is to be about 45 mL? (Approximate
calculation - 2 sig. figs is adequate)

Moles of NaOH = Molarity × Volume

=(0.14mol/L) (45ml x 1L/1000ml) = 6.3x10-3 mol

Mass of KHP = moles of KHP × molar mass of KHP

KHP has a molar mass of 204.22 g/mol

Mass KHP = 6.3x10-3 mol NaOH x 1 mol KHP/1 mol NaOH x 204.22 g/mol

=1.3 g of KHP should be used for the standardization of a NaOH solution
