Subject-Verb Agreement
The basic rule in subject-verb agreement is a singular verb takes a singular verb, while a plural subject
takes a plural verb.
R1. The subject comes before the “of-phrase.”
R2. Singular subjects connected by or, either/or, or neither/nor require a singular verb.
R3. When subjects are connected by or, either/or, or neither/nor, the verb agrees with the subject nearest to
it.
R4. Subjects connected by and take a plural verb.
R5. A singular subject separated by along with, as well as, besides, not, or parenthesis, takes a singular
verb.
R6. In inverted sentences beginning with there or here, the subject comes after the verb.
R7. When distances, periods of time, sums of money, and the like are considered as a unit, use singular
verbs.
R8. Abstract nouns, when used as subject, take the singular form of the verb.
R9. When the subject is preceded by words indicating portions like majority, a lot, some, or all, the verb
agrees with the subject/noun in the “of-phrase,” reverse or Rule no. 1.
R10. Collective nouns like audience, group, class, or jury take either a singular or plural verb depending
on the intention of the speaker or writer.
R11. Sentences in the subjunctive mood are those that express a wish or that contrary to fact. The verb
used is “were” or the plural verb.
