Fundamental study to investigate the

impact of switching of variable shunt

reactor
Background
This study investigates the impact of switching of variable shunt reactor during restoration trail of
Lakvijaya PS from Upper Kotmale. Unit 1 generator was modelled as fixed voltage source (behind the
impedance) with actual leakage impedance of the machine and typical no load loss, load loss value and
leakage impedance were utilized in modelling of Generator TF.
In case of modelling transmission line from Upper Kotmale-Kotmale and Kotmale -Anuradhapura, actual
geometrical information were utilized.
Reactor was presented as an inductor with 7.7 H which is equal to the winding reactance at 20 MVar
Impact of VSR switching was investigated at generator voltage of 30%, 50%, 90% and 100% while
other circuit is energized and loaded at rated voltage. The Inductor was switched on at time equals 2 s.
Further investigation was carried out with Anuradhapura Lakvijaya line with @ 90% excitation.
Investigation was also carried out such that the first generator volatge set to 30% and then closed the
complete circuit from UpperKotmale to Lakvija including 2 rectors with 20 Mvar tap position. Then
generator voltage was gradually increased up to 90%.
Generator terminal voltage, Kotmale Bus voltage( RMS), New Anuradhapura Bus voltage (RMS) and
reactive power supplied by the UKOT Generator 1 were measured and plotted. The results can be found
in Figure 1-27. The results indicate that reactive power oscillation may not create significant impact to the
generator control when only Kot-Anuradhapura line is energized. On the other hand, connection of
Lakvijaya- Anurdhapura line while reactor is connected to the system causes generator voltage oscillation
for 2-4 cycles without AVR effect.
Smooth generator voltage change and no oscillation can be observed when whole system is energized at
30% of generator voltage and increase Gen voltages gradually.
