Title: Load characteristics of the variable compound DC machine as a series-wound motor.

Experimental purpose: Operate the variable compound machine as a separately excited series-
wound motor. Determine the load characteristics n = f (M) and I A = f (M).
Necessary equipment:
 Variable Compound DC Machine (Type 2704)
 Brake Unit (Type 2719)
 Control Unit (Type 2730)
 Universal Power Supply (Type 2740)
 2 multimeters
Experimental Diagram:

Procedure:
 Firstly, observe the safety instructions.
 Then we will have to set up the experiment as shown in fig.
 Set the armature voltage to the left stop (0 V).
 Then I startup the experiment as previously explained. Operate the motor as a series-
wound motor. Set the setting of torque attenuator.
 Set an armature voltage of UA =205 V. keep the armature voltage constant throughout
the experiment.
 Load the motor with braking machine. For this, set torques given in table. Measure
speeds. Note the measured values.
Direction for use:
 When setting torques the armature voltage will vary. Adjust both values very finely in
alternating adjustment.
 Carry out measurements without delays if possible. If the motor heats up too much, the
measuring results will deviate, and motor must cool down.
 Set the armature voltage to zero. To finish the experiment first switch off the universal
power supply and then the Control Unit.
 Draw the characteristics in the prepared diagram Fig.

Conclusion:
I have accomplished all the requirements of the experiment as well as I have
handled all the complexities in the variable compound DC machine as a series-wound motor.
Consequently, I have successfully completed the experiment.

Q.1 What do you learn from the load characteristics in Graph?

Answer: Compound motors are used where series characteristics are required but the load is
likely to be removed completely. Series winding takes care of the heavy load, whereas the shunt
winding prevents the motor from running at dangerously high speed when the load is suddenly
removed.

Q.2 How high is the rated power of motor?

Answer: A Variable compounded dc motor delivers rated load power at rate speed, If the series
field is short circuited then IA remains constant but Wm increase.
