Title: Load characteristics of the variable compound DC machine as a series-wound generator

Experimental purpose: Operate the variable compound machine as a series-wound generator.
Determine the load characteristics U L = f ( I A)
Necessary equipment:
 Variable Compound DC Machine (Type 2705)
 Brake Unit (Type 2719)
 Control Unit (Type 2730)
 Universal Resistor (Type 2750)
 2 Multimeters
Experimental Diagram:
Procedure:
 Firstly, observe the safety instructions.
 Then we will have to set up the experiment as shown in fig.
 Then I startup the experiment as previously explained. Set setting of torque attenuator.
 Pressed the START/STOP key on control unit and set speed to 2000 rpm.
 Set armature currents asked for in table with load resistor R1 on universal resistor.
 Measure the voltage UL produced by generator.
Direction for use:
 Keep the speed constant at 2000 rpm throughout the experiment.
 Carry out measurements without delays if possible. If the motor heats up too much, the
measuring results will deviate and motor must cool down.
 To finish the experiment, switch off the Control Unit.
 Draw the characteristics in the prepared diagram Fig.
 Determine the scale for UL yourself.
Table:
I A/A

U L/V

Conclusion:
I have accomplished and fulfill all the requirements of the experiment according to
my compatibility very well. I have also striven very hard to attain a proficiency in the
experiment. Consequently, I have successfully completed the experiment.

Evaluation:

Q.1 What do you learn from the load characteristics in Graph?

Answer: In external characteristic, it is observed that the terminal voltage first increases with the
increase in load, reaches the maximum and finally decreases.

Q.2 What advantage does the variable compound machine have over the plain compound
machine?
Answer: The mechanical advantage of a compound machine is the ratio of the output force
exerted by the last machine in the series divided by the input force applied to the first machine.

Q.3 How high is the rated power produced by the series-wound generator in experiment?
Answer: The power rating of a DC generator is the rated maximum output when the terminal
voltage is the same as the rated voltage. The conductors, mechanical and thermal limitations, etc.
accounts the power rating of the machine.
