diseases resulting from nutrient deficiency
The learners should be able to:
LEARNING COMPETENCIES  Explain ingestion, absorption, assimilation, and excretion (S8LT - IVa-
13)
At the end of the session, the learners should be able to:
I.OBJECTIVES 1. Identify the organs that make up the digestive system.
2. Describe the function of each part of the digestive system.
II. SUBJECT MATTER DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
A. LEARNING RESOURCES
1.Teacher’s Guide Pages 208-210
2. Learner’s Materials Pages 295-297
3. Textbook Pages None
4. Skills Observing and Making of Inferences
B. PROCEDURES
ENGAGE
a. Idea of the skills or WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
competencies which are -Introduce the objectives of the lesson
expected to learn in the
module (WHAT I NEED WHAT I KNOW
TO KNOW) -Say: Before we begin exploring the new topic, let us test yourself to check
your stock knowledge regarding the topic to be discussed.
b. Activity that aims to -Instruction: Choose which you think is the correct answer.
check what you already 1. Which part of the digestive system is the passageway of food from the
know about the lesson mouth to the stomach?
to take (WHAT I KNOW) A. esophagus
B. rectum
C. anus
D. small intestine
2. After spending some time in the stomach, the food now is sent into?
A. rectum
B. anus
C. small intestine
D. large intestine
3. What is the function of the small intestine?
A. allows movement of food from the stomach to the rest of the body
B. for digestion and absorption of food
C. aids in mechanical digestion of food
D. acts as temporary storage of food
4. Which of the following is the function of the stomach?
A. secretes gastric juice
B. churns the food
C. stores the undigested food
D. eliminates the food
5. Which of the following is not a digestive function?
A. filtration
B. absorption
C. elimination
D. ingestion?

Say: -Everybody loves eating food but what

do you think happen next when you swallow
the food? Food is needed by our body
however even after we eat the body cannot
use the food right away. Food provides
nutrients for growth, for repair and for
energy of out body.
c. Reviewing previous
lessons (WHAT’S IN)
WHAT’S IN
Ask: What is digestion?
Say: Digestion is the process by which food is changed into simpler
substances that can be used by the body cells to produce energy.

EXPLORE WHAT’S NEW

a. Presenting examples/ Ask: What system of the body changes the food into substances that can be
instances of the new lesson absorbed by the body cells?
(WHAT’S NEW) Say: Digestive system is composed of
organs working together to get nutrients
from the food we eat. Our digestive
system has three main functions: to break
the food into smaller portion; t o absorbs
nutrients into bloodstream and transfer
nutrients to the cells to produce energy
and; to aid in elimination of undigested
food.

EXPLAIN WHAT IS IT?

a. Discussing new concepts and Parts of the Digestive System
practicing skills #1 (WHAT IS IT) Say: Digestion begins in the mouth where
food is mechanically digested by chewing or
mastication. When food is taken into the
INGESTION
mouth, it is called ingestion. As the food is chewed, saliva is released by the
salivary glands. Saliva is important for moistening the food, so that food can
easily be swallow and help in partial breakdown of food.

Ask: What will happen now to the food?

Say: The chewed food now is called bolus. The bolus will pass the pharynx
then to the esophagus. The smooth muscle of the esophagus contracts in
rhythmic wavelike motion called peristalsis which is a process that pushes
the bolus down to the stomach. The stomach is a large pear-shaped organ
that can temporarily expand to store the food. The sphincter muscle at the
end of the stomach contracts to keep the bolus inside. The churning action
of the stomach breaks down the bolus into smaller parts.

The bolus then mixes with acids. Inside the stomach are the gastric acids
which contain mucus, enzymes, water and hydrochloric acid. These
substances are secreted by the accessory organs, the pancreas, liver and the
gallbladder. The pancreas is an elongated organ behind the stomach. It
secretes pancreatic juice that help digest carbohydrates, fats and proteins
and because of these juices, the bolus changes it consistency called chyme.
The chyme is no longer a solid food, but it breaks down into thick liquid.
Another accessory organ is the liver which is the largest organ in the body
that produces bile which goes to the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small
sac under the liver where bile is stored. During digestion, the gallbladder
releases the bile into the small intestine. Bile helps to digest fats. The chyme
is then push into the small intestines. The small intestine a long-coiled tube
connected to the stomach. If it is stretched, it is about 7 meters long. Most
of the digestion takes place in the small small intestine. It adds substance in
the chyme to break it down further. Small intestine absorbs most of the
nutrients from the food and prepares the nutrients for circulation
throughout the different parts of the body.
b. Discussing new concepts and WHAT’S MORE
practicing skills #2 (WHAT’S Ask: How does the nutrients absorb by our body?
MORE)
Say: inside the small intestine, food nutrients move through the thin lining
and through the wall of the blood vessels into the blood. The blood will
carry the nutrients to the different parts of the body.

The undigested food particles are not absorbed and pass on to the large
intestines. The large intestine is the place where water from the undigested
food is absorbed. The indigestible food materials are broken down until only
the parts which are not useful to the body are left. These wastes will be
expelled in the form of feces. Peristalsis will continue to move the feces
towards the rectum. The rectum is the provide temporary storage for feces
before they are excreted. Peristalsis of the smooth muscle in the rectum
pushes the feces out of the body through the anus. This process is called
excretion.
ELABORATE WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
a. Developing mastery
that leads to formative
assessment (WHAT I
HAVE LEARNED)

WHAT CAN I DO
b. Finding practical Say: Digestive System is very important because it provides nourishment to
applications of concepts all body parts. It is also important that we know how to care of our digestive
and skills in daily living system. Here are some good eating habits.
(WHAT CAN I DO) 1) Eat food rich in fiber
2) Avoid eating too much spicy and fatty foods
3) Eat less sweets in between meals
4) Avoid buying uncovered ready to eat foods
5) Eat slowly and chew the food
6) Avoid swallowing big chunks of food
7) Avoid eating too much at a time to prevent indigestion
8) Drink plenty of fluids every day.
V. EVALUATE ASSESSMENT
Task which aims to evaluate Say: Let’s check your learnings! Now that you already grasped all the
your level of mastery in essential of action-reaction forces, try answering the following questions to
achieving the learning know have far have you gone.
competency (ASSESSMENT) Activity 1:
-Instruction: Choose the letter of the best answer and write the chosen
letter on a separate sheet of paper. Enjoy answering!

Activity 2: Draw a line showing which part/s of the digestive

system perform/s this process and briefly explain each process.
