DEFINING BEAU'S LINES
Your fingernails or toenails may have horizontal grooves or dents
called Beau's lines. All of your nails may be affected, or only a
select number, such as the ones on your thumbs and big toes.

3
CAUSES & SYMPTOMS

Beau's lines are a condition that develops when the nail's growth is inhibited at
the nail matrix, which is where the nail separates from the skin. They appear in
strong horizontal lines, occasionally with a faint yellow discoloration akin to
fungus infections of the nails. Beau's lines may cause irritation and pain at the
fingertips from discomfort brought on by the unusually formed nails. The
toenails can also develop Beau's lines. The growth of your nails is stopped by
illness or intense stress. Your body temporarily redirects its energy away from
developing nails if you get sick or are under a lot of stress.

• Injuries damage your nail matrix (where nails start to grow).

• Long-term health problems interfere with blood flow to your nail matrix.
• Severe skin conditions damage your nail matrix.
• Vitamin or nutrient deficiencies interrupt your nail growth.

TREATMENT METHODS &
BENEFITS OF TREATMENT
PERFORMED

Beau’s Lines cannot be treated. However, once they have grown out (approximately 6
months), treating the underlying reason may keep them from returning.
- Apply creams or moisturizers for eczema or psoriasis.
- Avoid manicures, artificial nails or harsh nail products.
- Keep blood sugar under control if you have diabetes
Applying a light coat of nail polish can temporarily disguise the ridges. However, use
caution while using nail products as some might weaken or harm the existing nails.

Beau's lines are not contagious in any manner, despite the fact that they are
sometimes linked to major health issues. Nail technicians should advise clients to
inquire about the nail anomaly with their doctor if they aren't already aware of it
rather than attempting to identify the issue. Clients should be alright with a standard
manicure and pedicure, but they should avoid being forceful with their cuticles
because doing so increases the risk of infection. 5
