Where do butterflies come
from?
The Beginning of a Butterfly the egg stage

● Butterflies lay their
eggs on specific plants
● It takes only 4 days
for the eggs to hatch
after being laid

Butterflies can lay 300-500 eggs between 2-5 week period

Caterpillar Stage

As a caterpillar I

● Hatch and stay as a caterpillar for 2

weeks

● Eat leaves to get energy to grow

● Prepare to become a pupa

● Shed my skin so I have room to grow

Pupa stage
● Caterpillars attach
themselves to a
leaf/branch to form
there
cocoon/chrysalis
● They use a silk pad to
attach themselves to
a leaf/branch
 Can you guess how long a
caterpillar is in the pupa stage
for?
10-15 days!

It can vary between different

types of caterpillars, but the
average is 10-15 days.
Butterfly time!
● After the 10-15 day period the butterflies leave their cocoons
● They claws there way out of there cocoon and comes out in the final stage as a
butterfly
● They are not able to fly right away do to weak and wet wings
● They are able to fly a couple hours later
