 Demo Plot in Wara Village

Objective Knowing the progress of the demo plot in the chieftain's farm in
Muliama Village, Muliama District; Collecting OAP farmer stories and
Making short documentaries for the agenda of the PRISMA
communication division run by Satu Bumi

Background:

Demo plot in Muliama Village, Muliama District, is one of the most remoted demo plots in
Jayawijaya Distric. To reach Yuli Dabi's Kampung Muliama demo plot, we have to drive by car for
30 minutes and walk for about 20 minutes. Yuli Dabi is a chieftain in Muliama Village, so with his
status, he has authority over the customary land (tanah ulayat) there.

Yuli Dabi started seeding Cabbage/Col Green Maestro cr in his demo plot on 5 July 2022. When
the PRISMA team arrived, the cabbages were ready to harvested. Yuli Dabi and the group awaited
for the arrival of TMI staff (Julian Kogoya) before harvesting and selling the cabbages.

Discussion Points:

 The types of plants in Yuli Dabi's crop include: local tomatoes, local chilies, sweet potatoes,
cassava, Chinese cabbage, and cabbage.
 Farm management is carried out by Yuli Dabi with the assistance of his wife, some of his
children who don’t go to school, and sometimes by his relatives. Yuli Dabi's wife and
children are more involved in day-to-day farming than Yuli Dabi. Yuli Dabi's wife is also in
charge to selling crop to the market in Wamena City.
 The location of Yuli Dabi's farm and residence is far away from the nearest market. To get
there, he must pay a taxi fee of IDR 100,000; for one trip.

Challenges:

 Transportation costs are too expensive because the location of the farm is far away from
the market. To reach the nearest market, a fee of IDR 100,000 is required for one trip only.
This situation also hamper the farmers, because farmers can only get the seeds at the
market in Wamena City.
 There are no traders who can buy crops directly from farmers, so farmers do not need to
transport and sell them to the market.
 Farmers still use retained seeds for several types of vegetables such as tomatoes,
cabbage, and Chinese cabbage/pitsay. Specifically for tomatoes, the local market is more
familiar with local tomatoes than tomatoes planted from certified seeds.
 There is almost no price difference between vegetables planted using retained seeds and
vegetables planted using certified seeds.

Follow up:

 Connecting traders with farmers so transactions can be done directly.

 Monitor the demo plot to find out the progress of crops and the development of planting
practices (GAP) that have been socialized by field staff.
