ABSTRACT

The study determines the impact of using power-point presentation as an instructional

tool to the performance of grade 12 ICT students in Pasay City South High School. This

study utilizes descriptive research that would be primarily concerned with the

information and observation about the impact of using power-point presentation as an

instructional tool to the performance of grade 12 ICT students. The study use probability

sampling technique through purposive sampling method. The researchers purposively

selected Grade 12 Information communication and technology students of Pasay City

South High School will be used as the respondents of the study. The study requires

Fifty (50) students who will serve as respondents in the study. Based on the findings of

the study, the researchers found out that most of the students related, but, quite in this

area, as the majority answer was shown in the column of Strongly Agree of choosing.

Overall, the findings imply that the selected Senior High School students are Using

Power-point presentation for their academics purposes most probably to have a good

and great reporting skills or learning strategy. It also indicates that Using Power-point

Presentation as a Instructional tool to the performance of grade 12 ICT student is good

because they learned a lot of things and they can get more ideas about preparing a

good presentation.

CHAPTER 1

I. INTRODUCTION

A. THE PROBLEM SITUATION

As a grade 12 ICT students we know that our generation, nowadays have

enough skilled and knowledge about technology and we witness the evolution of

technology where in we see the development, impact and improvement that

helps our country and other parts of the world especially teenagers and students.

It fill up’s our need in education.

This is the one that help us, and have a big impact to the students and

teachers but sometimes students having difficulties in understanding the lesson

through the strategies and teaching style of the teachers. That is why Microsoft

develops Power-point presentation slowly changed the teaching style of the

teacher that also affect the students learning. according to (asogwa,2011)

PowerPoint is part of the information and communication technology program

that could be used in the classroom for supporting students learning by

combining computer and projector to display slides for illustrating a lesson.

In this situation we can prove that PowerPoint have a big impact as an

instructional tool to the performance of grade 12 ICT students.

A. The Importance of the Study

Specifically, this study aims to benefit the following:

STUDENTS - Students will be given alternative way to understand the lesson easily.

TEACHERS - it can help teachers in presenting lesson more convenient.

SCHOOL – The use of Power point in school could be of great help for teachers who

are conducting seminars rapid information dissemination.

B. Purpose of the Study

This study aims to help the students in enhancing their learning competencies

and also to examine if using power-point presentation in classroom can improve the

efficiency of English teaching and learning.

C. Research Question

This study tries to find answer on the following questions:

1. What is the impact of Using Power point presentation on Students learning?

2. Why Power point presentation is a better alternative for learning?

3. To what extent is the impact of using power point presentation on the

Efficiency of a Presentation/Reporting?

7|Page
D. Review of Related Literature and Studies

Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation program develops by Microsoft. It is

the part of Microsoft Office system which is widely used by business people,

educator, and trainers. As the part of Microsoft Office suite, Power-point has become

the world most widely use presentation program. It is a complete presentation that

allows teachers to produce professional-looking presentation in EFL classroom

(Segundo & Salazar, 2011).

According to (Asogwa, 2011). PowerPoint is part of the Information and

Communications Technology (ICT) program developed by Microsoft in 1987. It is an

application program of presentation bundled in Microsoft office (El-Ikhan, 2010). It

consists of slides allowing the user to present messages. Information prepared on a

computer could be better projected for larger audience using a Liquid Crystal Display

(LCD) or DLP projector. PowerPoint presentation could be used in the classroom for

supporting student learning by combining computer and projector to display slides

for illustrating a lesson.

Proponents of PowerPoint argued that it increases visual quality in the

learning process. They also contend that it takes less time to present a subject

matter; therefore, more materials can be covered in the classroom.

Opponents of PowerPoint believe that it diminishes creativity and innovation besides

elevating format over content, betraying an attitude of commercialism that turns

everything into a sales pitch (Tufte, 2003).

8|Page
Gier and Kreiner (2009). Who studied the effectiveness of PowerPoint in

a psychology class concluded that when students were actively engaged in the class

using PowerPoint presentation, information retention increased. Another similar

study conducted by Nouri and Shahid (2005) reported that students in a PowerPoint

section of an Accounting Principles II class perceived higher understandability of the

presented materials than their counterpart in another class.

Bowman (2009) claims that presenting PowerPoint lecture notes to a

course site had no effect on attendance or grades. However, Raver and Maydosz

(2010) found that students who were provided with their instructors’ lecture notes or

PowerPoint slides before or after the lecture performed better in a pre-test/post-test

comparison than students who were not provided with these aids.

Bryant and Hunton (2000) state that the degree of improved learning is a

function of a complex set of interactions among learner and medium attributes.

Mason and Hlynka (1998) state that PowerPoint Presentation helps structure the

content and processing of a lesson or lecture. “The general model of information

processing assumes that encoding results in a memory trace, and that information

can be encoded at a representational, referential, or associative level” (Paivio 1990).

Students spend a lot of time at home playing games on their PC’s or surfing the

internet. This does not necessarily transfer to an increase in student achievement.

Furthermore, 45 to 90 minutes a week in the computer lab does not foster the type

of learning that will improve student achievement (Kozlowski, 2000).

9|Page
(Cradler, McNabb, Freeman, & Burchett, 2002).Claims that Research

reminds us that technology generally improves performance when the application

directly supports the curriculum standards being assessed

A review of studies conducted by the CEO Forum (2001) emphasizes

that “technology can have the greatest impact when integrated into the curriculum to

achieve clear, measurable educational objectives.”
