Located on the banks of the Magdalena River, in the Magdalena Medio

region, Barrancabermeja is the capital of the Province of Mares and the
second largest city in the department of Santander. It is a municipality where
the largest oil refinery in the country is located and the headquarters of the
Colombian Petroleum Company ECOPETROL. It is located 120 km from the
city of Bucaramanga.

This municipality has been strengthened economically over time, thanks to

the incursion of companies dedicated to the exploitation of hydrocarbons,
modern technology, innovation, infrastructure, educational and banking
institutions that it has, which has generated in the region and in its
inhabitants progress and development.

Barrancabermeja stands between lakes, lagoons, rivers and swamps, which is

why it is known by its inhabitants as the "city between waters". A city of
contrasts: on the one hand its natural environment; the importance of the
Magdalena River for the commercial exchange of the region with other parts
of the country; its scenic beauty, used by locals and visitors, for rest and
recreation; and the large oil and petrochemical industry that develops there.

Likewise, Barrancabermeja has sports venues and clubs with golf courses,
with average temperatures of 28°C, which require players to perform better
and make a greater effort than in other areas.

Barrancabermeja has always received influences from other regions of the

country, attracted by the black gold rush, which has notably enriched its
traditions and lifestyles. From its gastronomy, fairs, parties, music, and
culture, they have been permeated by people from the Caribbean Coast and
other surrounding departments."
