1st Quarter: Lesson 9 October 04, 2022

DIVISION OF
POLYNOMIALS
METHOD: LONG DIVISION

an algorithm for dividing polynomial by another polynomial of the

same or a lower degree.

P(x)/D(x) = Q(x) + R(x)/D(x)

where:
P(x) = dividend Q(x) = qoutient

D(x) = divisor R(x) = remainder

If P(x) and D(x) are polynomials abd D(x) ≠ 0, then there exist
unique polynomials Q(x) and R(x)

MAJOR STEPS TO FOLLOW

Divide first term of the numerator by the first term of the
denominator, and put that in the answer.
Multiply denominator by that answer, put that below the
numerator
Subtract create a new polynomial

Checking Formula:

P(x) = Q(x)D(x) + R(x)
